Little Falls, NJ (5/11/07) – Junior righthander
CAROLYN MCCREA (Wharton, NJ/Jefferson) tossed a three-hitter and second-seeded Montclair State took advantage of three College of Staten Island miscues as the Red Hawks downed the Dolphins, 3-1 in Game 7 of the 2007 NCAA Division III Softball Montclair, NJ Regional at the MSU Softball Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore designated player
KELLY KARP ( Edison , NJ /Edison) was 1-for-3 with an RBI as the Red Hawks (37-6) advance into Game 9 of the tournament where they will meet top-seeded Moravian in the first contest on Saturday, May 12 at 10:00 am . The winner of that contest would move into Sunday's championship round.
Centerfield Michele Mazza ( Staten Island , NY ) was 2-for-3 for Staten Island (28-11), which will face either Ramapo or King's College at Noon on Saturday in an elimination contest.
Staten Island took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as it loaded the bases with one out. Mazza singled to lead off the inning and Marianne Tepedino ( Staten Island , NY) reached on an error. Following a strikeout, Brianne Russo ( Staten Island , NY ) singled to right field. McCrea nearly got out of the inning as she induced a pop up for the second out however a wild pitch to the next hitter allowed Mazza to score with the game's first run.
That would be all the Dolphins would get as they managed just one hit over the final six innings as McCrea set down 13 of the final 14 batters to record her 29 th victory of the season, one shy of Dina DeAquino's mark of 30 set in 1988. McCrea fanned three and did not walk a batter. Christina D'Arpa ( Staten Island , NY ) took the loss to fall to 14-6. D'Arpa allowed three runs (one earned) and six hit, fanning four and issuing one walk.
Montclair State tied the game in the second as
MEGAN TANTUM (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) singled to center and
KELLY NANCE (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) reached on an error that allowed Tantum to move to third base. Karp then lined a sharp single to left field tying the game at 1-1. MSU took the lead in the fifth thanks in part to another error by CSI.
JACKIE FERRANTI ( Bergenfield , NJ / Bergenfield ) singled with two out.
JENNIFER JIMENEZ ( Linden , NJ / Linden ) the lofted a fly ball that was dropped and Ferranti running on the play easily scored to put the Red Hawks up 2-1.
Montclair added its final run in the top of the seventh as
WHITNEY DRIVER (Montville, NJ/Morristown-Beard) singled and was sacrificed to second.
MAUREEN SHOCKLEY (Magnolia, NJ/Triton) collected an infield single to put runners at the corners. With Ferranti at the plate, D'Arpa threw a ball in the dirt. Driver came down the line and when the throw to third was misfired, Driver scored to give the Red Hawks a 3-1 lead.
