Red Hawks Complete Weekend Sweep of Ithaca

Montclair, NJ – Junior lefthander NICK RECCHIA (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) tossed eight solid innings while junior third baseman ROBERT CLARK (Livingston, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in as Montclair State completed a weekend sweep of Ithaca College with a 72- victory at Yogi Berra Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman second baseman ANDREW HIMMELFARB ( Nyack , NY /Nyack) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI as the Red Hawks ended their regular season at 24-18. MSU will be among the teams in consideration for an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship which gets underway on Wednesday, May 16. Selections for the tournament will be announced on Monday, May 14.

Josh Smith ( Pulaski , NY /Pulaski) was 1-for-4 and drove in both runs for Ithaca , which finished out its regular season at 24-13.

Recchia improved to 4-0 this season as he allowed six hits, striking out three and walking one. Senior righthander RAY ANDERSON ( North Caldwell , NJ /West Essex ) closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two.

Montclair State got on the board in the second with two runs. Senior catcher ANDREW VICARO ( Randolph , NJ /Randolph) led off with a single and moved to second on a balk. ROB BOWNESS ( Sparta , NJ /Seton Hall Prep) followed with an infield single to move Vicaro to third before Clark stroked a single through the left side for the game's first run. Bowness would later score on a fielder's choice as MSU led 2-0.

Ithaca would get the two runs back in the third. Dylan Perez ( Petersborough , NH /Conval Regional (CT)) and Jeremy Peters ( Utica , NY /Thomas R. Proctor) opened the inning with consecutive singles and an error would move runners to second and third. Smith singled sharply to center to drive in both runs as the Bombers knotted the game at 2-2.

But Montclair State would answer in its half of the inning. Himmelfarb singled and JEFF MILLER ( Wyckoff , NJ /Ramapo) doubled. Vicaro lofted a sacrifice fly to give MSU the lead for good at 3-2. After a Bowness infield single, Clark collected his second run-scoring hit as Montclair led 4-2. LOU POLITAN ( Livingston , NJ /Livingston) accounted for the final run with a sacrifice fly.

Montclair would tack on a run in the fourth a Miller plated a run with a ground out for a 6-2 lead and the final run came in the seventh as pinch-hitter ED KLOEPPING (Pennsville, NJ/Penns Grove) singled home Politan.

Bowness was 2-for-4 for Montclair State as the Red Hawks collected 12 hits in the game. Todd Czerno ( Brainard , NY / Columbia ) went 2-for-3 for Ithaca .
