Volleyball Falls Twice at Red Dragon Classic

The recap below is part of the Red Hawk Retrospective where we chronicle past Fall seasons.
 

Cortland, NY– The Montclair State volleyball team opened its 2007 season with a pair of setbacks as the Red Hawks dropped two matches at the Red Dragon Classic held at SUNY Cortland on Friday evening.

MSU fell to SUNY New Paltz in four sets before suffering a 3-0 loss to defending ECAC Upstate champion Rochester, 3-0.


Sophomore middle blocker ANNA CHESNAKOVA had 27 kills and 7.5 total blocks in the two matches
 while classmate KARA BURNHAM 25 kills. Against New Paltz, the Red Hawks lost the first game, 30-20, but rebounded to even the match with a 31-29 victory in game two. After the Hawks won the third contest, 30-17, MSU battled in the fourth set before falling 32-20.

Chesnakova finished with 11 kills to go along with three block solos and three block assists while Burham added nine and six digs. Freshman DEVON JOHNSTON had eight kills and 33 digs in her first collegiate match with CHRISTINE TOSKOVICH registering eight kills and digs. KAREN MARTIN added seven kills, and 30 digs with setter RAISA SILVA recording 39 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore libero JINA MARSANO led all Red Hawk players with 53 digs.


Burnham and Chesnakova would get 16 kills apiece in the match with Rochester as Montclair fell 30-20, 31-29, and 30-25. SARA SIRAG had six kills and 34 digs while libero MEGHAN STEVENS had 41 digs. Toskovich served two aces, and Silva had 34 assists.


The Red Hawks continue action on Saturday, September 1, with a pair of matches to close out its appearance. Montclair will take on Swarthmore at 12:00 pm and then face either Buffalo State or 2006 NCAA participant Skidmore College at either 2:00 or 4:00 pm.
