Volleyball Sweeps Kean in Conference Opener

Montclair, NJ (9/11/07) – Sophomore middle blocker KARA BURNHAM collected a match-high 11 kills, while classmate CHRISTINE TOSKOVICH added five kills, three assists, and six service aces as Montclair State extended its winning streak to six with a 3-0 victory over Kean University in an NJAC contest at Panzer Gymnasium on Tuesday evening. 

MSU won the match by the game scores of 30-10, 30-13, 30-22.
 
Sophomore KAREN MARTIN and freshman DEVON JOHNSTON, the NJAC Rookie of the Week, each had seven kills for the Red Hawks, who are off to their best start since 1998 and are now 7-3 overall this season, 1-0 in the NJAC.
 
Senior outside hitter Alicja Ciastoch had nine kills and Colleen Masterson 15 assists for the Cougars, who are now 2-2 overall in dropping their conference opener.
 
The Red Hawks stormed out to an 8-0 lead in the opening game behind Johnston's serving, who had three aces in between kills by Martin and ANNA CHESNAKOVA. Another kill by Martin extended the lead to 12-3, and the Red Hawks led 18-4 as the Cougars committed back-to-back attack errors. Martin's service ace put the Red Hawks up 22-5, and consecutive kills by Burnham and Chesnakova made the score 27-7. MSU would win the game on a service error by the Cougars, who made 12 attack errors in the first game.
 
Montclair, which posted 18 service aces in the match, got out to an 8-4 lead in the second game as Toskovich collected an ace. After increasing the lead to 15-7 on a kill by Chesnakova, MSU ran off seven of the next eight points to take a 22-8 advantage on a service ace by setter RAISA SILVA. Kean would get within 24-12, but Montclair ran off five straight as Burnham had two kills, and Toskovich recorded consecutive aces. Following a point by the Cougars, Burnham finished off the game for the Red Hawks with a kill as MSU took the second game, 30-13.
 
In the third game, Kean led 10-8 as Ciastoch had two kills and Nicole Bolash one; however, Montclair State would eventually take the lead for good at 16-13 as Silva set up Burnham for her 10th kill of the match. Ivana Kapetanovic served up an ace to bring the Cougars within 16-15, but Montclair State slowly pulled away and closed out the match with the final four points. Toskovich added her sixth and final ace to bring MSU to match point, and Martin ended the contest with her seventh kill as the Red Hawks swept the match with a 30-22 victory.
 
Silva finished with 31 assists for Montclair State, which posted a solid hitting night, committing just nine attack errors for a .400 hitting efficiency. Chesnakova finished with four kills and two block assists with Silva, Martin, and Johnston, each recording three service aces. Libero MEGHAN STEVENS had a team-high 11 digs.
 
Masterson had 15 assists for Kean, which got four kills and five digs from Bolash. 
 
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, September 15, as the Red Hawks travel to Philadelphia Bible for a tri-match. Kean returns to the court on Friday, September 14, as the Cougars square off with SUNY-Morrisville in the Hawk Invite at SUNY New Paltz.
