Walsh Goal in OT Lifts No. 13 MSU Past Scranton, 2-1

Montclair, NJ (9/12/07) – Sophomore MEGAN WALSH (Lumberton, NJ / Rancocas Valley) finished off a 2-on-1 break 10:27 into overtime as 13th-ranked Montclair State remained unbeaten as the Red Hawks rallied from a 1-0 deficit with eight minutes remaining to beat Scranton, 2-1 on Tuesday evening at Fitzpatrick Field .

With the win, Montclair St. remains undefeated at 5-0 and extends its lead in the all-time series with the Royals to 8-0.  The loss was the second straight for Scranton, now 1-3.

The Red Hawks kept the pressure on Scranton early in the first-half but failed to convert on seven penalty corners.   With 12 seconds remaining before halftime, senior midfielder Clare Devine (Connelly-Holy Child) deflected a ball off of a penalty corner to junior midfielder Diana Rocklein (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip), who blasted in a shot from just inside the scoring circle for her first goal of the season.

The Royals had a golden opportunity to pad its lead early in the second-half on a 2-on-1 break, but Red Hawk sophomore goalie JACQUIE SUPKO (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) made a sliding save on a shot by Scranton senior forward Karolyn Holody (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn).   Supko finished with five saves.

Montclair State continued to fight back and put the pressure on the Royals defensively, but Scranton junior goalie Kristina Goetz (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) came up with a number of key saves, many on shots within point-blank range.

On a penalty corner late in the second-half, the Red Hawks finally broke through after Goetz made a save.  On the ensuing scramble in front of the cage, Montclair St. sophomore forward MEGAN PIETRUNTI (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) stayed with the play and was able to get the ball to teammate REBECCA DOBIESZ (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge), who tapped the ball past Goetz to tie the game at 1-1.

In the overtime period, Goetz made five saves before the Red Hawks pulled out the victory on a goal by Walsh on a pass from senior forward Jen Tanis (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) on a 2-on-1 situation.   For the game, Goetz finished with 12 saves.

Montclair St. out-shot the Royals, 24-8, and held an 18-5 advantage in penalty corners.

The Red Hawks return home to Sprague Field for a matchup with Wilkes University on Saturday, September 15 at 6:00 pm.
