Red Hawks Hand Widener First Loss, 3-1

Montclair, NJ (9/29/07) – Sophomore midfielder REBECCA DOBIESZ (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) scored once and added an assist while sophomore goalkeeper JACQUIE SUPKO (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) made 10 saves as 13th-ranked Montclair State turned the tables following its first defeat of the year by handing Widener University its first loss with a 3-1 win in NCAA Division III Field Hockey action at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

LAUREN ZEHNDER (Emmaus, PA/ Southern Lehigh) and DEANA HAGEL (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) each had goals for the Red Hawks, who moved to 9-1 on the season in winning the first meeting between the teams.

Senior midfielder Colleen Guille (Springfield, PA/Springfield) scored the lone goal for the Pride, who fell to 8-1.

Widener took control in the early part of the game as the Pride got off four shots, all turned away by Supko, who made a season-high for saves in the contest. Montclair State would change the momentum and break through on the scoreboard at the 10:24 mark as Zehnder scored her first goal of the season. Off a penalty corner, ANNALISA VALERIO (Norristown, PA/Kennedy Kenrdick) tried to deflect a shot from the top of the circle, however goalkeeper Megan Purcell (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) got a piece of the attempt. The ball landed in front of the cage where Zehnder was able to slap in the loose ball inside left post for a 1-0 Montclair lead.

From there Montclair would gain most of the play and this time Purcell kept the margin at a goal as she made three saves over the next 15 minutes until Dobiesz collected her sixth tally of the year at 25:12. MEGAN PIETRUNTI (Middletown, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) moved along the end line on the right side toward the goal before slipping a pass in front to Dobiesz, who one-time the shot past Purcell to give the Red Hawks a 2-0 advantage.

MSU would increase its lead to three four minutes later as Hagel recorded her first career marker with 5:08 to play before the half. JESSICA MURPHY (West Long Branch, NJ / Shore Regional) fired a shot off a penalty corner that banged off the post. The ball came out to Dobiesz, who played the ball over to Hagel for the goal.

Widener would start second half strong getting the first seven shots of the period, however Supko again came up big with four saves. The Pride would finally broke the shutout at the 44:31 mark as MSU was whistled for a penalty stroke. Guille stepped to the line and lifted a shot inside the left post for her third of the season.

Purcell finished with 10 saves as well as Montclair State outshot Widener 19-16 with the Pride holding the edge in penalty corners, 12-10.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday, October 2 with home contests. Montclair State will take on backyard rival William Paterson in an NJAC matchup at Sprague Field beginning at 7:00 pm. Widener is also home at the same time taking on Cabrini College.
