Volleyball Tops Farmingdale State at Hunter Invitational

New York, NY (9/29/07) – Freshman DEVON JOHNSTON collected 26 kills and was named to the All-Tournament Team as Montclair State went 1-2 at the Hunter Invitational on Saturday.

The Red Hawks (11-10) fell to host Hunter in five sets and dropped a 3-0 decision to Kings Point before knocking off Farmingdale State for the second time this season.

Against Hunter, MSU lost its second straight 3-2 match as the Hawks rallied from a two-game deficit to win by scores of 23-30, 31-33, 30-20, 30-13, and 15-8 in the decisive fifth set. Sophomore KAREN MARTIN led the Red Hawks with 14 kills and 21 digs, while Johnston contributed 10 kills and 18 digs along with two solo blocks. CHRISTINE TOSKOVICH had five kills and 19 assists while SARA SIRAG added five kills, 14 assists, and nine digs. Libero MEGHAN STEVENS had a team-high 23 digs for Montclair State.

Merchant Marine handed MSU its third straight defeat as the Mariners won the match 30-22, 30-21, and 30-28. Martin had 11 kills and 12 digs while Johnston rung up eight kills and six digs. KARA BURNHAM posted seven kills and two blocks assists. Sirag had 15 assists and Toskovich 13 as MSU received 10 digs from freshman KRISTEN RUGGIERI.

Montclair would snap its losing streak in the final match of the day as they downed Farmingdale State for the second time this season. Johnston had eight kills and 11 digs as MSU posted game victories by scores of 30-21, 30-24, 30-25. Martin had six kills and nine digs, and Sirag recorded three kills, 16 assists, and five digs. Ruggieri led all Red Hawks with 22 digs with sophomore ANNA CHESNAKOVA, adding five kills and three blocks.

Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, October 2, as they return to New Jersey Athletic Conference play at local rival William Paterson University.
