MSU Falls to Central (IA), Baruch in Tri-Match

New York, NY (10/17/08) – Sophomore outside hitter DEVON JOHNSTON  (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown)  had 21 kills and 20 digs combined, but short-handed Montclair State, missing three starters, dropped a pair of matches on Friday evening losing to Central College (Iowa) and Baruch by scores of 3-0 and 3-1, respectively.

The Red Hawks fell to 15-11 on the season as they were without juniors KARA BURNHAM (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown), ANNA CHESNAKOVA (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) and libero MEGHAN STEVENS (Woodcliff Lake, NJ / Pascack Hills). All three missed the match due to illness and injury as Montclair dressed just six players for the tri-match.

Central took the opening match as the Dutch posted the straight-set win by scores of 25-10, 25-17 and 25-14.

Johnston and KAREN MARTIN (Sicklerville, NJ / Washington Township) each ahd five kills with sophomore KRISTEN RUGGIERI (Hillsdale, NJ / Pascack Valley) contributing 13 assists and 10 digs. ANGELA PAPASSO (Farmingdale, NJ / Colts Neck), starting her first match of the year had seven digs

Middle hitter Lindsay Jennings (Atkins, Benton HS) had 11 kills in 16 attempts and hit .625. Outside hitter Miranda Kouba (senior, Dubuque, Wahlert HS) had seven kills and hit .583 with eight digs while Snyder had 21 assists and six service aces for the Dutch.

Montclair State would split the first two sets with the host Bearcats falling 25-22 in the opener before squaring the match with a 26-24 win in set No. 2. However the Bearcats took the match by capturing the final two sets, 25-22 and 25-18.

Johnston had 16 kills and 15 digs to go along with four service aces while CHRISTINE TOSKOVICH (Garfield, NJ / Garfield) added 12 kills, three aces and 11 digs. Martin collected a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs while Ruggieri registered 42 assists. Adrienne Moe (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) had seven kills and six digs and Repasso contributed eight digs.

Montclair State is now off until Friday, October 24 when the Red Hawks return to New York to face Lehman College at the APEX beginning at 6:00 pm.
