Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 11 Field Hockey Edged by William Paterson 1-0

Wayne, NJ (10/8/08) - No. 19 William Paterson (9-3, 1-2 NJAC) scored it first upset victory, as well as its first conference win of the year with a 1-0 field hockey decision against No. 11 Montclair State (8-3, 0-3 NJAC) Oct. 8 at the Pioneers' Wightman Stadium.

The two teams played a scoreless first half as each side took four shots, despite the Red Hawks owning a 7-3 edge in penalty corners.

The best scoring opportunity of the opening period came during the 26th minute when MSU junior forward MEGAN PIETRUNTI (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) fired a penalty-corner shot to the left side of the cage, but William Paterson goalie Christina Auger (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) got a piece of the ball and deflected it away to keep it a 0-0 score.

The Pioneers had the early run of play during the second half and nearly got on the board when sophomore Lauren Duensing (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton) received a ball on the doorstep of the goal following a long cross, but Montclair State goalie EMINA UDRJIA (West Paterson, N.J./Passaic Valley) snuffed out the shot during the 41st minute.

Two minutes later, the Pioneers' hard work on the attack paid off when William Paterson drew a corner. Junior Christina Ayusa (Runnemede, N.J./Triton) took the ball out and hit it to senior Tina Londino ( Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) at the top of the circle. Londino slid the ball to a waiting Jodi Feriod (Glassboro, Glassboro) on the left-wing, and she passed to Ayusa on the end line. Ayusa's shot from the tough angle bounced into the cage for her eighth goal of the year and a 1-0 William Paterson advantage.

Senior Meghan Hall (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) nearly made it a two-goal lead for the Pioneers with 8:13 remaining in the contest, but her penalty stroke was stopped cold by Udrjia.

Auger finished the contest with seven saves for William Paterson, while Udrjia made seven stops for Montclair State. The Red Hawks out-cornered the Pioneers 13-6, but WP owned a 9-7 edge in shots.

The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, October 11 as they face Wilkes University.
