Softball Sweeps Geneseo, Wisconsin-River Falls

Orlando, FL (3/16/08) – Senior righthander CAROLYN MCCREA (Wharton, NJ / Jefferson) tossed a two-hit shutout in the first game and then picked up the victory in the second as Montclair State posted a pair of wins at the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday. MSU blanked SUNY Geneseo, 6-0 before knocking off 13 th-ranked Wisconsin-River Falls, 9-5.

Senior JACKIE FERRANTI ( Bergenfield, NJ / Bergenfield) and sophomore MEGAN DURKIN ( West Orange, NJ / West Orange) each had three RBI as Montclair moved to 3-1 on the season.

McCrea picked up her first victory of the season as she allowed just two singles. The 2007 NCAA leader in victories, struck out seven and walked three as she retired nine of the final 10 hitters she faced.

Montclair got the only run she would need in the bottom of the third inning as WHITNEY DRIVER ( Montville, NJ / Morristown-Beard) drew a leadoff walk. After an out, Drive stole second and came home on MAUREEN SHOCKLEY's (Magnolia, NJ / Triton) RBI double. The Red Hawks then blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth with five runs. Four different players drove in runs in the inning, including KELLY NANCE (Marlboro, NJ / Marlboro), who doubled home one run while Ferranti added an RBI single.

Nance finished 2-for-3 for the Red Hawks.

Against UW-River Falls, the Red Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning but found themselves down 5-3 heading into the fourth inning. Montclair would respond with a pair of runs to tie the game as Ferranti belted a two-out, two-run home run.

MSU would then take the lead with a four-run fifth. Nance reached on a base hit and scored on a passed ball to give Montclair State the lead. Durkin provided the big hit, a two-run double to left field that scored pinch runner BRIANA HOPKINS ( West Warwick, RI / West Warwick) and KELLY KARP ( Edison, NJ / Edison).

McCrea (2-1) earned the victory in relief as she allowed just three hits and struck out eight in five innings. Karp had three hits for Montclair State while JENNIFER JIMENEZ ( Linden, NJ / Linden) and Driver each added two in MSU's 12-hit attack.

Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday with a pair of games at the National Training Center in Clermont, FL. Montclair will take on Messiah College at 9:30 am before facing in-state for FDU-Florham at 3:30 pm.
