Karp, McCrea Toss Shutouts as Softball Picks Up Two Wins

Clermont, FL (3/18/08) - Senior righthander CAROLYN MCCREA (Wharton, NJ / Jefferson) and junior lefthander KELLY KARP (Edison, NJ / Edison) tossed a combined 14 innings of shutout softball as Montclair State stretched its winning streak to four with a pair of wins over Messiah and FDU-Florham at the National Training Center on Tuesday afternoon.

McCrea hurled a one-hitter and struck out 10 as Montclair blanked Messiah 5-0. Karp then threw the first five innings as MSU completed the day with a 3-0 victory against in-state foe FDU-Florham. The wins upped the Red Hawks' mark to 5-1.

Against Messiah, McCrea (3-1) retired 17 of the first 18 hitters she faced until allowing a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Meanwhile, Montclair would snap a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. AMANDA LIVSEY (Congers, NY / Congers) drew a one-out walk and WHITNEY DRIVER ( Montville, NJ / Morristown-Beard) following with an infield single. MAUREEN SHOCKLEY (Magnolia, NJ / Triton) delivered an RBI single for the first run of the game and JENNIFER JIMENEZ ( Linden, NJ / Linden) followed with a two-run double as MSU moved in front, 3-0.

Montclair extended its lead with a run in the sixth as Karp brought home a run on a ground out and added one more in the seventh on a RBI single by JACKIE FERRANTI ( Bergenfield, NJ / Bergenfield).

Shockley had three hits for MSU while Ferranti and MEGAN DURKIN ( West Orange, NJ / West Orange) had two hits apiece.

The pitching zeros kept piling up for Montclair in the second game as Karp (2-0) went the first five innings giving up one hit and striking out six before giving way to McCrea, who two scoreless innings to pick up her first save of the year.

The Red Hawks got a run in their first at bat. Shockley singled and went to second on an error with one out. After a second out, freshman KACIE NEUROUTER ( Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) singled home Shockley to give Montclair a 1-0 lead. MSU then widened its lead in the fifth. CHERYL BODAK ( South River, NJ / South River) singled with one out and Driver followed with another base hit. With two outs and the bases loaded, Jimenez drew a walk to force home one run and Neurouter followed with a base hit to give MSU a three-run advantage.

Neurourter and Ferranti each had two hits for MSU.
