MSU Batters Moravian, 14-3

Little Falls, NJ – Senior designated hitter ROB BOWNESS (Sparta, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs as Montclair State snapped a two-game losing streak with a 14-3 victory over Moravian College at Yogi Berra Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior righthander D.J. CUNNINGHAM (Florham Park, NJ / Hanover Park) tossed five scoreless innings to pick up the victory while freshman shortstop JAY BIONDE (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock) drove in two runs as the Red Hawks improved to 5-7 while winning for the fourth time in their last six contests.

Junior rightfielder Josh Hinkle (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) drove in a pair of runs for the Greyhounds , who had their four-game winning streak snapped in falling to 12-6.

Montclair jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning as MICHAEL NUNES (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) led off with a single and LOU POLITAN (Livingston, NJ / Livingston) followed with a walk. After a flyout moved Nunes to third, senior catcher JEFF MILLER (Wyckoff, NJ / Ramapo ) delivered an RBI single for the first run of the game.  Bowness would extend the lead with a two-out single that brought home both Politan and Miller. Bowness provided the final run of the opening inning as he went from first to third on a wild pitch and came home as the throw to third skipped away giving Montclair the 4-0 lead.

The Red Hawks added six more in the second. ANDREW HIMMELFARB (Nyack, NY/Nyack) walked to lead off and went to second on a single by Nunes, his second hit of the game. Politan drove home Himmelfarb with a base hit and STEPHEN PISCITELLO (Hauppague, NY/Hauppague) followed with an RBI single as Montclair went up 6-0. ED KLOEPPING (Pennsville, NJ / Pennsville) walked with the bases loaded for the seventh run and VICENTE MEDINA (North Bergen, NJ / Paramus Catholic) added an RBI single as Montclair increased its lead to 8-0. Bowness would collect his third RBI on a fielder's choice and later scored on a wild pitch to cap the six-run innings for the Red Hawks.

Bowness capped his day with an RBI triple in the fourth and KEVIN CUOZZI (Langhorne, PA / Neshminy) made it 12-0 on a groundout. Bionde finished MSU's second-highest run total this season with a two-run single in the sixth.

Moravian would get itself on the scoreboard as senior second baseman Brett Stout (Easton, PA/Easton) singled home a run before Hinkle added a two-run base hit.

Cunningham allowed just two hits, striking out seven and walking one as he improved to 2-1. Sophomore lefthander Dustin Pflug (Clark, NJ / Arthur L. Johnson) suffered the loss (0-1).

Miller and Nunes each had two hits for the Red Hawks, who outhit the Greyhounds, 11-10.  Hinkle, Stout and Joseph Durso (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) had two hits apiece for Moravian.

Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, March 27 as the Red Hawks open NJAC play against defending NCAA Division III champion Kean University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm at Yogi Berra Stadium. Moravian is back on the diamond on Wednesday, March 26 as they travel to Haverford College for 3:30 pm start.
