Madison, NJ (3/26/08) – Senior attack
BRYAN KLIMCHAK (Clark, NJ / Arthur L. Johnson) scored six goals as Montclair State posted its sixth straight victory holding off FDU-Florham, 12-11 in an NCAA Division III men's lacrosse match on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore
TAYLOR BONNER ( Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) added a goal and two assists as the Red Hawks moved to 6-1 on the season while avenging an 11-9 loss to the Devils (0-5) in Florida last season. MSU moved to 10-16 all-time against FDU-Florham.
FDU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead but the Red Hawks tied it at 2-2 after a quarter of play on goals by
MARIO PASSAFIUME (Boonton, NJ / Mountain Lakes) and Klimchak and took a 3-2 lead with 12:33 left in the first half as Klimchak collected his second of the game. Freshman attack Tom Byrne (Bellmore, NY/Mepham) scored for FDU to tie it at 3-3 but the Red Hawks answered with three of the next four goals to take a 6-4 lead into halftime. Klimchak had two of those goals, including the final one with 58 seconds remaining.
The Devils came out hot to start the second half, scoring the first three goals to grab a 7-6 advantage with 9:27 left in the third. The Red Hawks responded right away though, scoring five of the next six goals to take an 11-8 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Trailing 8-7,
TYLER MEIXNER ( Hamburg, NJ / Vernon) registered a man-up goal to tie the game and Klimchak's fifth tally gave MSU the lead for good with 4:11 left. Bonner scored with 1:22 left and
JOHN SCHIAVONE ( Montclair, NJ / Montclair) provided a key goal as he scored at the horn on a man-down situation.
FDU cut the deficit to 11-10 with 3:44 remaining on a goal by sophomore attack Wayne Sartorio (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) but Montclair came back to take a 12-10 lead just 0:22 later on Klimchak's final goal. The Devils found the back of the net with 2:55 to go but could not get the game-tying goal as Montclair escaped with the win.
Junior goalkeeper
THOMAS BOWERS ( Hamburg, NJ / Pope John XXIII) finished with nine saves for MSU, which was outshot in the game, 36-31. Sartorio led the Devils with three goals while Byrne had two goals and an assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Evan Mager ( Suffern, NY/Suffern) made eight saves in net.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, March 29 as the Red Hawks host Widener University at Sprague Field in a 1:00 pm start.
