Little Falls, NJ - Junior Brian Sheekey (Palm Coast, FL/Father Lopez) had three RBI while freshman Brian Butler (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo Regional) was 3-for-4 as Montclair State completed the season sweep of New Jersey City University 8-3 Thursday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.
Lance Whitley (Brooklyn, NY/Canarsie) led the Gothic Knights (5-16, 1-7 NJAC) with a 3-for-4 performance. Sheekey finished 2-for-5 with a double for the Red Hawks (11-12-1, 6-4 NJAC).
Montclair broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning as they plated three runs. Senior Joe Giacomiazzio (East Brunswick, NJ/ E. Brunswick) drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly. Sheekey then doubled home Butler for MSU's second run of the inning and rounding out the scoring was an RBI double from leftfielder Mike Halligan (Pompton Plains, NJ/Seton Hall Prep). The Gothic Knights answered back with one run in their next at bat. Hector Molina (Jersey City, NJ/St. Aloysius) lined a two out double down the leftfield line for NJCU's first run of the game.
The Red Hawks put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth as they tacked on two runs for an 8-2 lead. PJ Baccarella (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) had a one out RBI double while Sean Jones (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) later drove Baccarella in with an RBI single.
Steve Hagemann (Sussex, NJ/Vernon Twp.) earned his first victory of the 2003 season. Hagemann (1-1) threw five innings allowing two runs on seven hits. Keith Schneider (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) earned the Red Hawks first save of the season as he tossed four innings allowing just one unearned run and one hit. Jason Burgos (Jersey City, NJ/St. Aloysius) suffered the loss for New Jersey City. Burgos (0-1) allowed 14 hits and eight runs, six earned. He also struck out two and walked five.
Offensively for MSU Mike Weiss (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape Regional), Baccarella, and Halligan each finished with two hits. Jeff DeCaito (North Caldwell, NJ/West Essex) and Molina each had RBI's for the Gothic Knights.
