Cortland, NY (8/30/08) – The Montclair State volleyball team finished in fourth place at the Red Dragon Classic held at Cortland on Saturday. MSU (2-2) fell to eventual champion New Paltz in the semifinals, 3-0 before dropping a five-set match to Lebanon Valley in the third-place contest.
Junior
KARA BURNHAM (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) was named to the All-Tournament Team. MSU fell to New Paltz in the semifinals straight sets, 25-12, 25-22 and 25-12. The Red Hawks then forced a deciding fifth game in the consolation game with Lebanon Valley before falling 16-25, 25-16, 19-25, 26-24, 7-15.
In the match with New Paltz, sophomore
DEVON JOHNSTON (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) led the way with seven kills and 12 digs while juniors
ANNA CHESNAKOVA (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) and
KAREN MARTIN (Sicklerville, NJ / Washington Township) added seven and six kills, respectively. Burnham collected five kills while setter
RAISA SILVA (Newark, NJ /East Side) had 21 assists. Libero
MEGHAN STEVENS (Woodcliffe Lake, NJ / Pascack Hills) contributed 13 digs.
Johnston had 13 kills and eight digs in the loss to Lebanon Valley with Burnham also gaining double digits with 12 kills along with four block assists. Chesnakova had nine kills and Martin recorded eight along with seven digs. Silva had 39 assists.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, September 2 as they travel to Hackettstown, NJ to face Centenary College in a 7:30 pm matchup.
