Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 6 Men's Soccer Blanks Centenary 6-0

Montclair, NJ (9/11/08) – Junior forward MICHAEL CULLEN netted a pair of goals, while classmate JOHN ESPOSITO added one and two assists as sixth-ranked Montclair State rolled to its fourth straight victory with a 6-0 win against Centenary College at Sprague Field on Thursday evening.

Senior goalkeeper NICK MELE picked up his 40th career win setting a new Montclair State record as the Red Hawks improved to 4-0 this season. It is the fourth consecutive year that MSU has opened the year with four victories, and the Red Hawks have now won 43 of their last 49 contests dating back to the beginning of the 2006 campaign (43-4-2).

Montclair, which outshot Centenary 29-2 in the contest, got on the board at the 25:33 mark as MICHAEL CULLEN scored his second goal of the season. Sophomore CHRIS EDELSCHEIN made a pass from the left side on to Esposito's foot, who one-touched the ball to Cullen for the score as Montclair took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Red Hawks exploded for four goals in an 8:29 span, including three tallies within 3:41. TYLER MASTERSON got the scoring going as he chipped an Esposito pass over a sliding Centenary goalkeeper Damien DiBuono for his second of the year at 49:23. Less than two minutes later, MICHAEL CULLEN connected on his second, taking a pass from brother Joe Cullen in front of the net and banging home the shot.

Edelschein extended the lead to 4-0 at the 53:54 mark, with the Red Hawks scoring run was capped off by Esposito four minutes later as he made a spin move around one defender before unleashing a high-arching shot over the head of DiBuono for his second of the year.

Junior MIKE VERMES capped off Montclair's scoring with his second goal with 1:16 left.

Now 40-4-2 in his MSU career, Mele extended his own school record with his 25th career shutout. DiBuono made 10 stops for the Cyclones.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, September 13. Montclair State is home to take on Massachusetts College at MSU Soccer Park while Centenary is back out on the road to face Purchase College.
