Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Edelschein Scores Twice As Men's Soccer Cruises Past MCLA 6-0

Montclair, NJ (9/13/08) – Sophomore CHRIS EDELSCHEIN scored a pair of early first-half goals, which turned out to be all that sixth-ranked Montclair State would need as the sixth-ranked Red Hawks moved to 5-0 on the season with a 6-0 victory over Massachusetts College at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday afternoon.

Senior forward TYLER MASTERSON had a pair of assists as Montclair posted its fifth consecutive shutout in winning its opening five games for the third straight season. It is the 31st shutout in Montclair's last 50 games, which has gone 44-4-2 over that span.

Sophomore goalkeeper Adam Tarsa made four saves for the Trailblazers, which fell to 2-2 on the season. It was the first meeting between Montclair and MCLA.

Edelschein gave Montclair State a 1-0 lead 8:10 into the contest as he collected his second goal of the year off a Masterson assist. Ten minutes later, the duo would combine again as the Red Hawks led 2-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Masterson would get a goal of his own. MSU's leading scorer, Masterson, registered his third of the season off a pass from JOHN ESPOSITO at 54:59, and JOSEPH CULLEN converted a penalty kick just under four minutes later as the MSU lead grew to 4-0. The goal was Cullen's first of the year to go along with three assists.

Freshman RODRIGO SANTIAGO would collect the fifth goal with 10:09 to play as his shot down the middle slipped through the hands of Tarsa. MIKE VERMES capped off Montclair's scoring for the second consecutive game as he netted his third of the year with 4:32 remaining. Vermes also had the final goal in the Red Hawks' 6-0 win over Centenary on Wednesday.

Goalkeepers NICK MELE and TEDDY RITTER combined on the shutout, with Ritter making one save in his 16:51 minutes of action.

The Red Hawks outshot the Trailblazers, 19-3.

Montclair State returns to action on Monday, September 15, as they host Neumann College in a rescheduled match at 8:00 pm on Sprague Field. The original date was rained out last Saturday due to Tropical Storm Hanna.
