Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 6 Men's Soccer Tops Neumann 3-1

Montclair, NJ (9/15/08) – Junior MICHAEL CULLEN scored once and assisted one another goal while NJAC Offensive Player of the Week TYLER MASTERSON added two assists as sixth-ranked Montclair State moved to 6-0 with a 3-1 victory over Neumman College at Sprague Field on Monday evening.

Senior BRIAN MILES and junior JOHN ESPOSITO each collected goals as the Red Hawks captured their 29th straight home game dating back to the final home contest of 2005.

Senior forward Jesse Urquhart had a goal for the Knights, who fell to 0-3-2.

The game was a rescheduled contest from September 6 and just the second between the program. Montclair State won the initial meeting 8-0 back in 2002.

It took only 77 seconds for Montclair State to put a goal on the scoreboard. Joe Cullen served a ball off a corner kick that was knocked back out to the left sideline. Cullen regained possession and made a move around a defender before crossing a ball through the goalmouth to the far post where Miles banged home a shot into the middle of the net for his first of the season.

Montclair nearly added to its lead with 2:32 before halftime as goalkeeper Zack Ratliff and Michael Rudden collided on a through ball, leaving the net wide open. Masterson would loft a ball toward the empty net, but Esposito's header flicked just over the crossbar.

In the second half, the Red Hawks kept up the pressure and got two good opportunities in the first seven minutes, both by MICHAEL CULLEN, whose first shot, a hard left-footer, was snared by Ratliff. Cullen would get another chance, but his arching shot from in close on the right side clanked off the crossbar.

Neumann would get its first scoring chance with 35 minutes to go on a corner kick. Urquhart made a crossing pass to the far post; however, Rudden's header went just wide. The Knights kept pushing and would finally capitalize with the first goal allowed by the Red Hawks this season. Neewilli Sale found Urquhart, who trickled in a shot past MSU goalkeeper NICK MELE with 29:53 left in the second half ending the Montclair State scoreless streak at 510:07 this year. Last year, Montclair ran a streak of nearly 805 minutes before surrendering a goal.

Montclair would regain the lead with 18:30 remaining as Esposito ended a frustrating early portion of the game as he knocked in his third goal of the year. Masterson headed a perfect pass to MICHAEL CULLEN, who in turn, bounced another header onto the foot of a streaking Esposito, who blasted the ball into the left side for what turned out to be the game-winning tally.

Masterson set up the final goal by MICHAEL CULLEN with 8:25 left. The two assists gave Masterson 69 career points as he moved past Gus Moramarco (1988-91) into sole possession of 13th place on the all-time scoring list.

Mele finished with two saves for Montclair State, which held a 22-5 advantage in shots and 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Ratliff collected eight saves for Neumann.

The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, September 17, as they travel to Staten Island, NY, to face the College of Staten Island in a 4:00 matchup while Neumann is also on the road that day at Elizabethtown College.
