Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 14 Field Hockey Gets Past Susquehanna 3-2

Montclair, NJ (9/20/08) – The Montclair State field hockey team, ranked 14th in Division III, received a goal apiece from DIANA COLOMBO (Westhampton, NJ / Rancocas Valley), MEGAN WALSH (Lumberton, NJ / Rancocas Valley), and MEGAN PIETRUNTI (Middletown, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) as the Red Hawks moved to 7-0 on the year with a 3-2 victory over Susquehanna in an NCAA Division III Field Hockey matchup at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

ANNALISA VALERIO (Norristown, PA / Kennedy Kendrick) and JESSICA MURPHY (West Long Branch, NJ / Shore Regional) each collected assists as the Red Hawks have won seven straight to open the season for the third time in four years.

Anna Spisak ( Boiling Springs, PA / Boiling Springs) and Laurel Monaghan ( East Fallowefield, PA /Coatesville Area) scored goals for Susquehanna, which fell to 1-6.

Susquehanna would control the action early in the first eight minutes of the game as it picked up several penalty corners and got three shots, including one by Monaghan off a penalty corner that keeper EMINA UDRJIA ( West Paterson, NJ / Passaic Valley) knocked away. Montclair would flip the advantage and nearly got the first score as Pietrunti put a shot on goal that appeared headed toward the back of the cage only to be swatted away by defender Julia Amendola (Mountain Top, PA / Bishop Hoban). Montclair also had another would-be goal called back on a high stick call.

Five minutes later, MSU would get on the board as Pietrunti netted her fourth of the season on a penalty stroke. But that lead would be short-lived as Spisak collected her second of the year the 26:15 mark. Amendola put a shot on goal toward the right side, where Spisak could redirect it over Udrjia, knotting the game at 1-1.

In the second half, the Red Hawks would regain the lead with 14:16 to go. JUSTINE DIPAOLO ( Lanoka Harbor, NJ / Lacey) ripped off a shot from the top of the circle that Erin Ferguson ( Mount Laurel, NJ / Seneca) made a save on. The ball bounced out in front where Valerio could get a stick on it and slip a pass on the left side to Colombo, who flipped in the shot in ahead of a diving defender for her team-leading sixth tally of the year.

MSU would extend the lead to 3-1 four minutes later at the 59:20 mark as Walsh tipped in a shot by Murphy from the left side. The goal was Walsh's second of the season. Monaghan would record the game's final score with time expired as she converted a pass from Jenelle Anthony ( Saylorsburg, PA / Stroudsburg) off a penalty corner.

Udrjia made three saves for Montclair State while Ferguson had eight for Susquehanna. Montclair had the advantage in shots 15-9 while Susquehanna won the penalty corner category, 8-7.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, September 24, as they travel to Madison, NJ to face Drew University. Susquehanna is back on Sunday, September 21, with a game versus Stevens in Hoboken, NJ.
