Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 5 Men's Soccer Takes Down Rowan 3-1 in NJAC Opener

Montclair, NJ (9/20/08) – The Montclair State men's soccer team, ranked fifth in Division III, moved to 8-0 this season as the Red Hawks topped Rowan University, 3-1 at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Senior TYLER MASTERSON and juniors JOHN ESPOSITO and MICHAEL CULLEN each netted a goal as Montclair has opened the season with eight straight wins for the second time in three years.

The win was also the 99th for head coach Brian Sentowski, who is 99-25-12 in his seventh season with MSU. Sentowski is looking to join Rob Chesney (128 wins) as the only head coaches in program history to record 100 victories.

Junior midfielder Jason Choma scored the lone goal for the Profs, who fell to 3-4 overall this season with their second consecutive loss.

Cullen put the Red Hawks on the scoreboard just shy of 14 minutes into the game as he took a pass from MIKE KROL on the left side and blasted a shot over the head of goalkeeper Joel Sanger into the right corner of the net for his fifth tally of the season.

That's how the game would stay until the final 20 minutes when the teams combined to score three times.

Montclair extended its lead as defender BRIAN MILES launched a free-kick into the box where Esposito deflected the ball in for the goal as Montclair went up 2-1 with 16:55 left. But Rowan would cut the lead in half less than four minutes later. Jay Vigilante fed Choma a pass outside the 18 that the latter would bury it into the top left corner for his first goal of the season.

That would be as close as the Profs would get as Masterson put home the final goal with four seconds left. MIKE VERMES picked up the assist as he slipped a pass to Masterson, who chipped the ball over the goalkeeper for his fifth of the year.

Sanger had eight saves for the Profs while MSU netminder NICK MELE had one for MSU. The Red Hawks outshot Rowan 18-5 and had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday, September 24, with road NJAC contests. Montclair State is at Alumni Field in Newark to take on Rutgers-Newark, while Rowan will be at The College of New Jersey.
