Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Blanks Rutgers-Newark 1-0

Montclair, NJ (9/24/08) – Freshman forward RACHEL SENYSZYN (Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) scored her team-leading fifth goal 4:50 into the second half as Montclair State picked up its first NJAC victory of the season blanking Rutgers-Newark, 1-0 at Sprague Field onWednesday evening.

Junior goalkeeper LEAH TEPPERMAN (North Andover, MA / North Andover) stopped three shots as MSU snapped a two-game losing streak while squaring its record at 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the league.

Freshman goalkeeper Kat Renteria ( North Bergen , NJ / Cliffside Park ) made seven saves for the Scarlet Raiders, who suffered their second straight one-goal conference loss (0-2) while also falling to 4-4.Rutgers-Newark dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Ramapo on Saturday.

Montclair State outshot the Scarlet Raiders, 16-4, however it was Rutgers-Newark that got the first solid scoring opportunity as Shauna Gallagher (Rockaway, NJ / Morris Hills) had a clear shot from the right side that went wide of the net 9:20 into the contest. But that would be the last shot the Scarlet Raiders would get until inside the final five minutes when leading scorer Julia Caseres ( Union , NJ / Union ) drove a freekick from 30 yards out that Tepperman snared out of the air to keep the game scoreless.

Meanwhile the Red Hawks couldn't find the back of the net either despite getting off seven shots.  Sophomore CHRISTYN SCILLIERI ( Wayne , NJ / Wayne Valley ) had the lone shot on net that Renteria pulled in as the game remained scoreless at half.

In the second half, Montclair would break through at the 49:50 mark. Freshman midfielder CHRISTINA DEMARTINIS ( Kinnelon , NJ / Kinnelon) lofted a pass from 40 yards out down inside 10 yards. Senyszyn picked up the pass and move in another five yards before chipping the ball over a sliding Renteria for what turned out to be the only goal of the game.

After the goal, each team would come close to upping the score, but Renteria and Tepperman combined to stop the final seven shots on goal. Tepperman made a save on Liana Abreu's (Newark, NJ / Science Park) header with 12:11 left and Renteria came up with a sliding stop of MEGAN BROWN's(Upper Saddle River, NJ / Ramsey) shot to keep the game at a goal.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday, September 27 with conference contests. MSU travels to Ewing , NJ to face 14th-ranked The College of New Jersey at 4:00 pm. Rutgers-Newark is back home at Alumni Field for a 7:00 pm clash with New Jersey City .
