Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 6 TCNJ Tops Field Hockey

Ewing NJ (9/30/08) - The College of New Jersey scored a pair of goals in each half as the sixth-ranked Lions netted a key New Jersey Athletic Conference victory over Montclair State University 4-1 on Tuesday.

The win was 14th straight in conference play for the third-ranked Lions and put them at 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in the conference. Montclair State, which is ranked 11th, slipped to 0-2 in the NJAC and are 8-2 overall.

The Lions grabbed the lead early as freshman Alex Okuniewicz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) knocked in a rebound 4:49 into the game. TCNJ doubled that lead on an excellent individual effort by sophomore Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) as she batted in her own failed centering pass while sprawled on the ground. That score came with 1:32 left before the half.

In the second half, the teams traded goals less than two minutes apart, with the Red Hawks getting the first of those scores to cut the margin in half. Junior MEGAN WALSH (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) got that goal as she redirected a centering pass from classmate MEGAN PIETRUNTI (Middletown, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) into the net for her third goal of the season. Senior Jackie Gelinas (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) quickly got the goal back for the Lions with her first of the season coming 8:54 into the half. That goal made it a 3-1 contest. The hosts closed out the scoring with 6:33 remaining as Okuniewicz netted her second of the game, cashing in on a penalty stroke.

Goaltender Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Jackson) made three saves to win. In goal for the Red Hawks, senior EMINA UDRJIA (West Paterson, NJ / Passaic Valley) collected seven saves.

The Red Hawks are now off until October 8 when they travel to conference opponent William Paterson University.
