Costly Error Allows Lynchburg to Down Montclair State, 3-2

Lynchburg, VA – An error with two-out in the bottom of the ninth allowed the winning run to cross the plate as Lynchburg College edged Montclair State 3-2 on Friday afternoon.

First baseman JASON LOPEZ homered for the Red Hawks (3-7), who dropped their second straight. MSU returns to New Jersey to face Cortland in its home opener on Saturday, March 21.

Lopez gave Montclair a 1-0 lead in the second with a solo homer to left. JAY BIONDE later singled with an error allowing Tim Swift to score giving the Red Hawks a two-run advantage. But Lynchburg (12-6) answered back with two runs in its half, knotting the contest at 2-2.

That's the way the game would stay until the bottom of the ninth when Lynchburg took advantage of several Montclair mistakes. A passed ball on a strikeout allowed the leadoff runner to reach. After a sacrifice moved the runner up, the next hitter was hit by a pitch.

Reliever ZACHARY BROWN fanned the next hitter but a wild pitch allowed the runners to move up 90 feet to second and third. The Red Hawks then committed the error that ended the game.

Brown (0-2) took the loss. Left-hander NICK RECCHIA went the first eight innings giving up two runs and six hits, striking out four and walking two.
