Montclair Goes the Extra Inning to Down Rutgers-Newark

Newark, NJ –  Freshman third baseman ZACHARY BROWN's (Green Village, NJ/Morristown HS) fielder's choice grounder to first base brought home the winning run in the top of the 11th as Montclair State outlasted Rutgers-Newark, 4-2, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game in Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

Brown's hard grounder followed singles through the left side by freshman designated hitter MICKEY MCGRAW (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) and senior first baseman JASON LOPEZ (West New York, NJ/Memorial) wrapped around a sacrifice bunt by senior catcher MATT HARTWICK (Ringwood, NJ/Lakeland Regional).  A soft single to centerfield by freshman second baseman KEVIN MILLER (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) tacked on an insurance run.

Senior righthander MICHAEL STREAMAN (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) picked up his fourth win without a loss by going four innings in relief for the Red Hawks (12-11, NJAC 5-3).  He struck out three, walked no one and yielded three singles.

Montclair State freshman Kevin Weime (Bayville, NJ/Paramus) and Scarlet Raider sophomore Ryan Williams (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) were brilliant in their starting roles.  Weime gave up just three hits, struck out three and walked five before departing with two aboard and no one out in the eighth.  Williams gave up just four hits while striking out a career-high 11 and giving up no walks in 7-1/3 innings.  Each carried a shutout into the eighth.

Williams gave up singles to Lopez and Brown to open the eighth before striking out Miller.  Reliever Michael Adams (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) got a strike out before yield a walk and a two-run single to right field by sophomore leftfielder KEVIN BOND (Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove).

In the bottom of the frame, Weime gave up a single to sophomore second baseman Matt Connors (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights) and a walk to senior leftfielder Brian Gill (Wall, NJ/Wall) before giving way to Streaman.   After a sacrifice bunt by sophomore shortstop Patrick Reitemeyer (Kearny, NJ/St. Mary's) moved the runners into scoring position, they scored on a sacrifice fly by junior rightfielder Anthony Yeswita (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights) and a single to left by junior third baseman Joe Furnaguera (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) to knot the score at 2-2.

On Saturday, the Raiders (15-9, NJAC 5-4) visit Richard Stockton while the Red Hawks host The College of New Jersey in a pair of NJAC doubleheaders.  Both twinbills are set to start at noon.
