Little Falls, NJ – Sophomore centerfielder Mike Boggi (Towaco, NJ / Montville) drove in two apiece in both the fifth and sixth innings and finished 3-for-4 with five RBI as Montclair State extended its winning streak to seven games as the Red Hawks knocked off York (Pa.) College, 9-5 at Yogi Berra Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior first baseman
JASON LOPEZ (West New York, NJ / Memorial) was 2-for-4 with an RBI as the Red Hawks improved to 24-13 on the year with the victory. MSU goes back into NJAC Tournament play on Thursday as Montclair hosts No. 4 seed The College of New Jersey at 3:30 pm. Montclair State downed Ramapo 3-1 in the opening round on Tuesday.
Senior centerfielder Ryan Poff ( York, PA / Spring Grove) was 3-for-5 with two RBI for the Spartans, who fell to 27-13 this season with their third loss in their last four games.
York took a 1-0 lead in the second as CT Stanley (Timonium, MD / Calvert Hall College) belted his ninth home run of the year as he blasted a ball down the right field line about 10 feet inside the foul pole. The Red Hawks answered right back as
MATT HARTWICK (Ringwood, NJ / Lakeland Regional) singled with two outs and scored as Zach Brown (Green Village, NJ / Morristown) doubled down the left field line tying the game at 1-1.
The Spartans regained the lead in the third as Poff singled through the left side to score to score Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, NJ/ Seneca) and Mike Connolly (Selden, NY / Newfield) added an RBI single as York grabbed a 3-1 advantage. But again, Montclair answered right back tying the game for a second time with another two-out rally.
SCOTT EVANGELIST (Northfield, NJ / Holy Spirit) walked and
KEVIN BOND (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) followed with a base hit up the middle. Boggi brought home Evangelist with an infield single and Lopez followed with an single to center scoring Bond as the game was tied at 3-3.
MSU took the lead for the first time in the fifth scoring twice. Evangelist led off with a single and pinch-hitter
MIKE ERCOLANO (Vernon, NJ / Vernon) doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third. Boggi cracked a pitch off the center field wall for a double with both runner scoring as Montclair took a 5-3 advantage. The Red Hawks tacked on three more the following inning to take a 9-3 lead. Ercolano delivered the first run with an RBI single and Boggi added two more with his third hit of the game.
York would get two in the top of the ninth to complete the scoring. Rob Klinck (Stanhope, NJ / Lenape Valley Regional) brought home a run with a single and Poff added an RBI double for the final margin.
Freshman lefthander
SEAN HILLE (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph's (Metuchen)) picked up the win in relief to square his record at 1-1. Hille was one of six pitchers used by Montclair in the game. Andy Rosenzweig (Glen Rock, PA / Susquehannock) took the loss as he went the first 5.1 innings and fell to 6-5.
JAY BIONDE (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock), Evangelist, Ercolano and Hartwick all had two hits for MSU, which rapped out 18 in the contest. Connolly was 3-for-5 for York.
