Softball Drops NJAC DH to Rowan

Glassboro, NJ (4/5/09) – The Rowan University softball team won two conference games over Montclair State University, 5-0 and 7-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The Profs are 19-5 overall and 6-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Red Hawks have a 14-8 record with a 2-4 conference mark. Right-hander Jackie Sasko (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) was the winning pitcher in the first game. Sasko (12-1) scattered four hits and struck out eight batters. It was her sixth shutout on the season.

Left fielder Casey Roselle (so. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) led Rowan with two hits (three at bats), three RBIs, one run scored and a triple. Shortstop Ashley Minch (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) and center fielder Kristina Brenner (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) each contributed with one RBI. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) scored two runs.

For MSU, center fielder LESLIE GONZALEZ (so. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) was two for three. Lefty KELLY KARP (sr. Edison, NJ/Edison) took the loss. Karp (6-3) gave up six hits and had five strikeouts.

The Profs got on the scoreboard with one run in the second inning. Brenner singled in Leskanic who reached base with a single. In the third, Rowan went up 5-0 after scoring four runs. Roselle recorded a three RBI triple and she crossed the plate on Minch's single.

In the second contest, righty Amanda Singer (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/E. Brunswick) pitched four innings for the victory and Sasko went the final three for her second save. Singer (7-4) only allowed three hits. Right-hander ADRIAN RASTOCNY (fr. Colonia, NJ/Colonia) was the losing pitcher. Rastocny (7-3) was on the mound for the first three innings.

Leskanic totaled three hits in four at bats and one run scored. Designated player Ashley Landi (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) recorded a triple, two RBIs and one run scored. Right fielder Heidi Smith (sr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) was one for two with two RBIs. Minch added one hit (two at bats), one RBI, one run scored and a double.

Left fielder KELLY NANCE (jr. Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) was two for three with a double for the Red Hawks. Second baseman MEGAN DURKIN (jr. West Orange, NJ/West Orange) had one RBI and third baseman SAMANTHA DEPKEN (so. Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) scored one run.

Rowan went ahead 3-0 after scoring one run in the first, second and third innings. In the first, Minch crossed the plate on Smith's sacrifice fly. Minch had a RBI double in the second inning while Smith singled in a run in the third.

The Profs tacked on three runs in the sixth inning and the Red Hawks' lone run came in the bottom half. Landi's triple scored two runs and she came home on an error. MSU pitcher LEIGH ANN MURDUCA (so. Jersey City, NJ/St. Dominic Academy) walked and was replaced by Depken. Depken went to second and third on errors, then scored on Durkin's ground out.

Rowan's final run came in the seventh. Leskanic led off with a single and moved to second on a walk. She advanced to third on a fielder's choice and crossed the plate on an error.

The Red Hawks return to action on Tuesday, April 7 as they host NJAC rival Rutgers-Newark at the MSU Softball Stadium beginning at 3:00 pm.
