Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Hagel's OT Winner Pushes Field Hockey Past Muhlenberg

Montclair, NJ (9/12/09) – Junior forward DEANA HAGEL (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) scored with 4:06 remaining in the first overtime as Montclair State won its third straight game with a 1-0 victory over Muhlenberg College at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

Senior midfielder MELISSA BUTTRAY (Boonton, NJ / Boonton) assisted on the game-winner as MSU improved to 3-1 with its second overtime win in a week. Last Saturday, the Red Hawks downed Union College, 2-1 in OT.

Freshman goalkeeper Kristen Dornenburg (Haverford, PA / Haverford) made six saves for the Mules, who played their fourth straight one-goal contest, including three overtime decisions.

MSU leads the series between the teams 8-2, including the last six, with four coming by a one-goal margin. Last year, Montclair posted a 2-1 win in Allentown.

Shots came at a premium in the first half as only four were put on the board, three coming by Montclair. Dornenburg made three saves while MSU keeper MEGAN BOSLAND (Boonton, NJ / Boonton) made the only save she would make in the game. The MSU defense would hold the Mules without a shot over the final 35 minutes of regulation; however, the Red Hawks were also held off the scoreboard as Dornenburg stopped two shots.

Montclair appeared to finally breakthrough with 6:10 to play in the second as MELISSA FLAHERTY (Fishkill, NY / John Jay) sent a ball into the circle where it would be deflected by Hagel into the cage. However, the goal was waved off, and into overtime, the contest went. In the extra period, Buttray found Hagel for the latter's third tally of the season.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, September 16, as the Red Hawks conclude their four-game homestand against Stevens (7:00 pm). Muhlenberg opens Centennial Conference action on the road at Washington College, MD.
