Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Dominates Drew in 3-0 Win

Montclair, NJ (9/23/09) – Junior defender JESSICA MURPHY (West Long Branch, NJ / Shore Regional), senior midfielder MELISSA BUTTRAY (Boonton, NJ / Boonton), and junior forward DEANA HAGEL (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) each scored once as Montclair State dominated Drew University in a 3-0 victory over the Rangers at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

The Red Hawks defense did not allow a shot as MSU won its second straight and improved to 5-2 overall.

Goalkeepers Stef Rutkowski (Wilmington, DE / Tower Hill) and Lauren Fasano (Branchville, NJ / High Point) had five and four saves, respectively, as Drew dropped its second straight and fell to 4-3 on the year.

Montclair outshot the Rangers 25-0 in the game, 15 of those coming in the first half as the Red Hawks took a 2-0 lead at halftime. Murphy collected her fourth goal of the season as she scored off a Montclair penalty corner. Hagel made the insert to the near side for Murphy, who lifted a shot over Rutkowski's head into the right side of the cage for what turned out to be the only goal MSU would need.

Buttray tallied her second of the year just over five minutes later. Off another penalty corner, the Red Hawks kept the ball in as REBECCA DOBIESZ (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) moved in along the end line on the left side. She would flick the ball in front of the cage where Buttray could tap in for the score as Montclair went in front by two.

The Red Hawks' final goal gave 7:05 into the second half. Taking its 11th penalty corner of the contest, Hagel inserted the ball to JUSTINE DIPAOLO (Lanoka Harbor, NJ / Lacey) on the left side. DiPaolo fired off a shot toward the near post. Hagel would get a stick on it and redirect the ball in for her fourth goal to cap Montclair's scoring.

Freshmen goalkeepers MEGAN BOSLAND (Boonton, NJ / Boonton) and NOELL GOMEZ (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) combined on the shutout for Montclair State.

Both teams open conference play on Saturday, September 26. Montclair State heads to Glassboro, NJ, to face Rowan University at 1:00 pm. Drew is home to begin Landmark Conference action against Moravian at the same time.
