Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Union Upends Field Hockey 1-0

SCHENECTADY, NY - Senior forward Kelsey Powers scored the lone goal of the game with 15:06 remaining, and senior goalkeeper Sarah Rios made seven saves to lead Union College to a 1-0 non-league field hockey victory over Montclair State University at Frank Bailey Field Saturday afternoon.

The Dutchwomen improved to 6-2 on the season while the Red Hawks fell to 6-3 with their second straight loss.

Powers took a feed to the left side of the net from a corner from Caroline Moran. Her first shot was blocked, but the rebound came right back to her, and she shot it in from 12 yards out for her sixth of the season at 54:54.

Thanks to Rios, the goal held up who made seven saves on the day for the shutout victory. In the final 3:06, the Red Hawks produced seven shots, including three by Diana Columbo (Westampton, NJ / Rancocas Valley), to send the contest to an extra session. BROOKE HULLINGS (Delran, NJ / Delran) shot with 1:56 left from the right post was just high, and Rios stopped Columbo with 1:12 left. After a corner by DEANA HAGEL (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) with 53 seconds remaining, Rios made consecutive stops on shots by JESSICA MURPHY (West Long Branch, NJ / Shore Regional) and Columbo before the end of the period.

Isabel Zellweger had four shots while Powers had three for the Dutchwomen. BRITTANY CARROLL (Kingston, NY / Rondout Valley) took a game-high five shots for the Red Hawks, while each team finished with 18 shots on the day. Montclair had five corners to Union's four.
