Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Hagel Sister's Guide Field Hockey Past Ramapo

Mahwah, NJ (10/5/10) – Senior forward DEANA HAGEL (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) scored twice while sister Michelle added a goal and assist as Montclair State snapped a two-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over Ramapo in a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday afternoon.

Freshman BRITTANY CARROLL (Kingston, NY / Rondout Valley) also had a goal and assisted as the Red Hawks bounced back from a pair of 1-0 setbacks to improve to 7-3 on picking up their first conference win of the season. The game was actually MSU's second league contest. Montclair led Kean 3-0 in the first half of its September 22 game when rain and lightning forced the game's suspension until November 1.

The Red Hawks jumped on the board less than five minutes into the game. Off the second penalty corner of the contest, senior DIANA COLOMBO (Westampton, NJ / Rancocas Valley) found Carroll for the goal as Montclair led 1-0 at the 4:42 mark. The goal was Carroll's third of the season.

MSU continued its press on the offensive end as it put forth nine more shots before breaking through again. The Hagel's pulled off the sister-to-sister goal combination with Deana getting the score, her fifth of the season, as Montclair State led 2-0 with 18:44 remaining in the first half.

Ramapo would cut the lead to a goal seven minutes later on its first shot of the game. Rebecca Penhaker (Wantage, NJ / High Point) recorded her second goal of the year off a penalty corner as the Roadrunners trailed 2-1 with 11:58 to play in the opening period.

The Roadrunners would need just 46 seconds into the second half to tie the game as Amanda Baretta (Roseland, NJ / West Essex) scored her 11th goal. The goal seemed to turn the momentum toward Ramapo, which got the next two shots on goal; however, keeper MEGAN BOSLAND (Boonton, NJ / Boonton) stopped each one keeping the game at 2-2.

But DEANA HAGEL flipped the score back in favor of the Red Hawks, scoring her second of the game at 41:27 to put Montclair State back in front. MICHELLE HAGEL would cap the scoring less than four minutes later as she knocked in a feed from Colombo for her first of the year.

Bosland finished with a pair of saves for Montclair State, which outshot the Roadrunners, 15-4 in the contest and holding a 12-1 advantage in penalty corners. Rebecca Elliott (Brick, NJ / Brick) stopped seven shots for Ramapo.

Montclair State is back in action on Friday, October 8, as MSU hosts New Paltz at Sprague Field beginning at 7:00 pm.
