Red Hawks Win Seventh Straight, Down CCNY, 67-57

Montclair, NJ  – Junior forward ANDREW AUGUST (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) scored 15 points to help Montclair State University win its seventh straight game with a 67-57 victory over CCNY in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon at the Panzer Athletic Center.

Senior guard RODNEY FREENEY (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) scored 13 points and senior forward CHARLES MILLER (Linden, N.J./Linden) had 11 in reserve for Montclair State University (7-1)..

The Red Hawks looked like they would run away with the game in the first half. MSU quickly established a 10-point margin at 16-6 with 14:03 to play. The double-digit advantage grew to as much as 18 points in the period, the last time at 32-14 with 3:24 remaining before taking a 35-22 advantage into the intermission.

But CCNY (2-6) made a huge comeback in the second half. The Beavers, trailing 43-27 with 14:28 to play, held MSU without a field goal for the next 9:12 as it closed to within two points at51-49 with 5:51 left. Senior guard Xavier Gonzalez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth) scored nine of his 14 points and sophomore guard Kenny Rubenstein (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) added six of his game-high 16 points during the 22-8 run.

But that would be as close as CCNY would get. Montclair State, which made 24-of-32 from the free throw line, was good on 18-of-23 from the charity stripe in the second half, including 8-of-9 down the stretch to pull away at the end.

Montclair State, off to its best start since opening the 2002-03 season 12-0, will look to extend its winning streak when its host Vaughn College on Tuesday (Dec. 14) at 7 p.m.
