Red Hawks Power Past North Carolins Wesleyan, 17-6

Demorest, GA – Senior rightfielder SCOTT EVANGELIST (Northfield, NJ / Holy Spirit) homered and drove in four runs while sophomore lefthander SEAN HILLE (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph's (Metuchen)) pitched five scoreless innings as Montclair State picked up its first win of the season with a 17-6 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan at Piedmont College on Saturday afternoon.

Junior second baseman ANDREW HIMMELFARB (Nyack, NJ / Nyack) had three hits and a pair of RBI for the Red Hawks, who are 1-1 on their weekend set in Georgia. Montclair closes out its schedule on Sunday, March 7 against Piedmont at 5:00 pm.

The Red Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Himmelfarb singled with two out and scored as KEVIN BOND (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) smacked a triple to give MSU a 1-0 lead. MICHAEL BOGGI (Towaco, NJ / Montville) followed with a run-scoring double to make it a two-run advantage.

Montclair added to the lead the following inning with three runs, two coming off the bat of Evangelist, who blasted his first round-tripper of the year after JAY BIONDE (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock) drew a leadoff walk. Boggi added a sacrifice fly for a 5-0 lead the lead grew to 9-0 in the fourth as MSU tacked on four runs. Himmelfarb highlighted the inning with a two-run triple and Bond collected an RBI single.

After getting two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth, the Red Hawks put a five spot on the board in the seventh inning. MICHAEL PATTERSON (Piscataway, NJ / Piscataway) had a sacrifice fly and pinch-hitter SCOTT GLOZZY (Hackettstown, NJ / Warren Hills) later added a double that drove in two runs. MATTHEW MORENO (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) and IVAN RODRIGUEZ (Newark, NJ / East Side) each had RBI singles in the inning.

Meanwhile the pitching was left up to Hille, who allowed just three hits, struck out five and walked three as he earned his first decision of the season  (1-0). Freshman JASON CHESTERMAN (Bloomfield, NJ / Bloomfield) was 3-for-5 for MSU, which collected 17 hits in the game. Boggi and Bond had two hits apiece.
