Red Hawks Suffer Season-Opening Loss to New Paltz

Montclair, NJ (9/1/10)  - Sophomore middle hitter Dana Vosilla (Massapequa Park, NY / Massapequa) collected eight kills while Stephanie Skrobach (Webster, NY / Webster Schoreder) added six kills and eight digs as New Paltz posted a three-set victory over Montclair State in the season opener for both teams at the Panzer Athletic Center on Wednesday evening.

Freshman Brigid Moore (Victor, NY / Victor) added 16 assists and eight digs as the Hawks (1-0) knocked off MSU, 25-19, 25-9 and 25-16.

Junior KRISTEN BRONOWICH (Secaucus, NJ / Secaucus) and freshman MARTA TOPOR (Bogota, NJ / Bogota) each had five kills for Montclair State.

New Paltz jumped out to a 6-0 lead on the service of Melinda DiGiovanna (West Hempstead, NY / West Hempstead) before Montclair battled back to take a 10-9 lead as Topor served up an ace for the Red Hawks. A service error by New Paltz allowed MSU to move in front 12-11 however the Hawks scored the next three to take the lead for good. Michelle Jacobson (Cortlandt Manor, NY / Hendrick Hudson) collected a kill for an 18-16 lead and a kill by Dana Kindelmann (Nesconset, NY / Sachem North) made the score 23-18. Skrobach added a kill of her own before Kindelmann closed out the first set with her third kill as the Hawks won 25-19.

DiGiovanna keyed the set for New Paltz as she collected a kill for a 2-1 lead and then served six straight points as the Hawks raced out to an 8-1 lead. Montclair closed within 9-4 but Skrobach began a four-point run that included two aces by Marissa King (Canandaigua, NY / Canandaigua Academy) as New Paltz went up 2-0 in the match with a 25-9 win in set No. 2.

Tara Annunziata (Massapequa Park, NY / Massapequa) and Kelly Lavender (Apalachin, NY / Owego Free Academy) had four and three kills, respectively as the Hawks closed out the match with a 25-16 win in the third set.

DiGiovanna had three aces and 11 digs while libero Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, NY / C.W. Baker) added 10. Lavender finished with five kills while Annunziata, Kindelmann and Jacobson each had four.

ALYSSA BATISTE (Manahawkin, NJ / Southern Regional) had three kills, four assists, two aces and four digs for MSU while Topor posted a team-best 12 digs. Libero KAITLYN IRWIN (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) added 10 digs and BELLA MILSTEIN (Edison, NJ/JP Stevens) registered nine assists.

Both teams return to action on Friday, September 3 in the Red Dragon Classic held at SUNY Cortland. Montclair State will face Fredonia and St. Lawrence at 4:00 and 6:00 pm, respectively. New Paltz takes on Baptist Bible and Lebanon Valley at the same time.
