MSU Gets First Win, Splits Matches at Kean Invitational

Union, NJ (9/17/10) – Freshman MARTA TOPOR (Bogota, NJ / Bogota) collected 23 kills, two aces and 19 digs as Montclair State picked up its first win of the season while splitting  a pair of matches at the Kean Invitational on Friday evening. The Red Hawks downed host Kean in four sets in their NJAC opener before falling in three sets to City College of New York.

Sophomore ALYSSA BATISTE (Manahawkin, NJ / Southern Regional) had 14 kills, 30 assists and 13 digs on the evening as MSU (1-11, 1-0 NJAC) defeated Kean 25-13, 19-25, 25-21, 25-23. MSU then fell to CCNY, 25-23, 25-16, 25-17.

In the win over Kean, Topor led Montclair State with 14 kills and also added nine digs and two service aces. Kristen
Bronowich (Secaucus, NJ / Secaucus) added 10 kills, five digs and two aces while Batiste registered 10 kills, 15 assists, eight digs and three block assists. Setter BELLA MILSTEIN (Edison, NJ / JP Stevens) had 14 assists and six digs with libero KAITLYN IRWIN (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) notching a team-beat 16 digs. Alli Boettinger  (West Orange, NJ / West Orange) totaled four blocks in the win.

Topor came within one kill of a double-double in the loss to CCNY as she posted nine kills along with 10 digs. Bronowich had six kills and 1 0 digs with Batiste getting four kills, five digs and 15 assists. Irwin recorded 20 digs to give her 36 for the two matches.

The Red Hawks continue action in the Kean Invitational on Saturday, September 18 as MSU faces Berry at Noon followed by a 2:00 pm match with Centenary College.
