Red Hawks Drop Doubleheader with No. 4 Kean

Union, NJ – The Montclair State baseball fell to 11-8 overall, 3-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference as the Red Hawks lost both ends of a doubleheader at No. 4 Kean University on Saturday. MSU fell 9-3 in the opener before being shutout for the first time in 37 games, 2-0 in the nightcap.

The host Cougars put MSU in an early 3-0 deficit as Kean scored three times in the bottom of the first in the opener. Montclair would cut that lead to a run in the second scoring twice as Matt Moreno (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) scored on a wild pitch and KEVIN BOND (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) lofted a sacrifice fly.

Kean though would answer back with a run in the thirdand three more in the fourth taking a 7-2 advantage. The Cougars would tack on two mroe runs in the sixth before MSU got its final run, an RBI single by CODY PACE (Milltown, NJ / Spotswood) in the eighth inning.

Sophomore righthander Zach Brown (New Vernon, NJ / Morristown) took the loss, his first of the year as he fell to 3-1.

Moreno, Pace and MICHAEL BOGGI (Towaco, NJ / Montville) had two hits apiece for Montclair State.

In the second game, freshman lefty DYLAN PAPA (South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield) put together a solid performance going eight innings allowing two runs and six hits. But Kean's Kevin Herget was a bit better tossing a five-hit shutout as he outdueled Papa (0-1) for the victory.

Kean pushed across single runs in the fourth and sixth innings for the only scoring of the game. MSU had two chances in the game to plate a run, including the fifth inning. JASON CHESTERMAN (Bloomfield, NJ / Bloomfield) opened the inning with a double and went to third on a wild pitch. But MSU could not get him home as Herget retired the next three hitters to keep the Cougars in front.

Chesterman had two of Montclair State's five hits in the game.

The Red Hawks return to action on Tuesday, April 12 as they host Keystone College at Yogi Berra Stadium beginning at 3:30 pm. It is the start of six-games in five days for MSU, which will host 24th-ranked Johns Hopkins on Wednesday. Montclair then takes on currently NJAC leader Rutgers-Newark in a home-and-home set on April 14 and 15th (at Yogi Berra Stadium) before wrapping up the week with a home doubleheader on Saturday, April 16 versus Rowan.
