Union, NJ - After enduring a 15-inning marathon win over Rutgers-Newark earlier in the day, Montclair State could not keep its momentum going as the Red Hawks were ousted from the New Jersey Athletic Conference Baseball Championship with a 6-1 loss to #23 Rowan University at Jim Hynes Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Matt Moreno (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) drove in the lone run for the Red Hawks, who fell to 20-17 on the season. MSU will close out its season with four games this week as they host Johns Hopkins at Yogi Berra Stadium on Tuesday, May 10 at 7:00 pm. Montclair then travels to Salisbury University on Thursday, May 12 before wrapping things up with a weekend set at home versus Ithaca College on Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15.
Rowan jumped on top with a run in the first inning as the Profs strung together three consecutive hits for a 1-0 lead and added another score in the second to take a two-riun advantage.
Montclair would cut that lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
MICHAEL BOGGI (Towaco, NJ / Montville) led off with a single and stole second with one out. After a pop up, Moreno singled back through the middle of the infield for the RBI as the Red Hawks would pull within a run.
The Profs (30-10-1) would pushed the lead to 4-1 with two runs in the sixth inning and got two more in the seventh for the final margin.
Sophomore righthander Zach Brown (New Vernon, NJ / Morristown) took the loss to fall to 5-3.
MIKE ERCOLANO (Vernon, NJ / Vernon) and
ANDREW HIMMELFARB (Upper Nyack, NY / Nyack) had two hits apiece for Montclair State.
