Union, NJ - The Montclair State women's soccer team, ranked in the Top 10 in two different national polls, remained undefeated on Wednesday evening as the Red Hawks topped Kean University 3-0 at Alumni Stadium.
Juniors Kaila Fasano (Westwood, NJ, Westwood) and Melanie Greco (Bridgewater, NJ, Bridgewater-Raritan) each had a goal while sophomore Stefanie Gomes (Kearny, NJ, Kearny) also had one as the Red Hawks, ranked No. 3 by D3Soccer.com and No. 8 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, improved to 13-0 on the year, 6-0 in the NJAC with their 11th shutout.
Montclair got off to a fast start in the match and scored two first-half goals. Senior Allison Wacker (Stockholm, NJ, Wallkill Valley) assisted both goals; Fasano scored the first and Greco headed in the second to stake the Red Hawks to a 2-0 lead at the break. Shannon Pedersen had the only shot of the half for the Cougars, which she put on goal at 4:06.
Carla Vitola had a couple great chances for Kean in the second period. Both times the senior shot the ball top shelf from approximately 25 yards out but Montclair goalkeeper Gina Policastro (East Brunswick, NJ, East Brunswick) punched them both just over the crossbar to preserve her shutout.
Gomes added a third MSU goal on a free kick from 40 yards out that grazed the underside of the crossbar as it went in with no margin for error.
Policastro had three saves as she recorded her ninth shutout of the season. MSU, which has allowed just two goals this season, outshot Kean 24-3. The Red Hawks have surrendered only 66 shots this season through the first 13 contests.
KC Nunez finished with seven saves on the night for the Cougars.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, October 15 as it hosts New Jersey City University at MSU Soccer Park beginning at 6:00 pm.
