Martina Landeka (Westfield, NJ, Westfield) and junior
Kaila Fasano (Westwood, NJ, Westwood) scored 18 seconds apart in the first two-plus minutes of the game as third-ranked Montclair State cruised to a 4-0 victory over New Jersey City University at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday evening.
Freshman
Jennie Hornstra (Clifton, NJ, Clifton) and junior
Kerry Glynn (Old Bridge, NJ, Old Bridge) each added goals as the Red Hawks, ranked No. 3 by D3Soccer.com and No. 8 by the National Soccer Coaches Association, remained unbeaten at 15-0, 7-0 in the NJAC with their 18th win against the Gothic Knights in 20 all-time meetings.
Junior goalkeeper Brittany Hoffman (McMurray, PA / Peters Township) had 14 saves for NJCU, which fell to 1-9-1 overall, 0-7 in the NJAC.
Montclair came out flying and scored on each of its first two attempts. Landeka got the first goal 1:52 into the game as she finished off a feed from Fasano inside the left post for her third of the year giving MSU a 1-0 lead. It grew to 2-0 as Fasano made it a two-goal lead in the blink of an eye. Senior
Jenna Carroll (East Brunswick, NJ, East Brunswick) collected a ball on the left side sending it through to the six yardline where Fasano tapped it in for her sixth goal of the year.
The Red Hawks would outshoot the Gothic Knights 18-0 in the first half however it was Hoffman, ranked fourth in the nation in saves per game, who kept the game close with several solid stops as she made 11 saves in the first 45 minutes. MSU added a final goal in the first half when
Kendel Bernardini (Elmer, NJ, Schalick) assisted on Hornstra's goal with 3:29 to go in the first half.
Glynn tallied her fifth of the season in the 77th minute on an assist from Janae Geonnetti.
Freshman goalkeeper
Meghan Calcaterra (Madison, NJ, Madison) recorded a win and shutout in her first career start. The shutout was the 13th for the Red Hawks in 15 matches this season. Montclair currently leads Division III in goals against average and is second in shutout percentage.
Both teams are now off until Saturday, October 26 when they return to action with NJAC road contests. Montclair State is a Richard Stockton for a 3:00 pm contest in Galloway Township while NJCU heads the Ewing, NJ to face The College of New Jersey at 1:00 pm.
