Montclair, NJ – Sophomore midfielder
Ryan Morris (Freehold, NJ, Freehold Township) netted a hat trick, including two during the first half as Montclair State overcame an early one-goal deficit for a 5-2 victory over Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday evening at MSU Soccer Park.
Junior
Brian Cullen (Clementon, NJ, Highland Regional) and sophomore
Lucas Terci (Union, NJ, Union) each had a goal and assist as the Red Hawks got back on the winning track in the NJAC improving to 9-2-1 overall, 2-1-1 in the conference.
Junior midfielder Patryk Dawidczyk (Bayonne, NJ / Bayonne) scored both goals as the Scarlet Raiders (9-3-0, 1-2-0 NJAC) fell for the second time in their last three games following an eight-game winning streak.
Rutgers-Newark capitalized on the first corner kick of the match with Dawidczyk getting his third goal of the season. After Anthony DeRisi (Allentown, NJ / Allentown) served the ball in, Dawidczyk was able to corral a loose ball finishing the play with a header giving the Scarlet Raiders the early 1-0 lead.
Montclair tied the game in the 29th minute on Terci's fourth of the year.
Jesse Shea (Marlton, NJ, Cherokee) played the ball back in to Terci who dribbled in on the keeper before firing a shot from nine yards out for the goal.
Morris gave Montclair State the lead at the 34:36 mark of the first half with the first of his three goals and his second five minutes later helped the Red Hawks to a 3-1 lead the break.
MSU would add its final two goals late in the contest. The first came from Morris at 75:26 with Cullen following 2:12 later on an unassisted tally for a 5-1 Montclair State advantage.
Dawidczyk capped off the scoring in the match with his second goal, a 25-yard direct kick to the far post.
Freshman goalkeeper
Michael Gonzalez (Kenilworth, NJ, Union Catholic) made five saves for Montclair State while sophomore Matt Broomall (Somers Point, NJ / Mainland Regional) had four stops for the Scarlet Raiders.
The Red Hawks are now off until Tuesday, October 8 when it hosts Rhode Island College at MSU Soccer Park beginning at 7:00 pm. Rutgers-Newark continues action in the NJAC with a home contest against The College of New Jersey on Saturday, October 5 at 1:00 pm.
