Meet Results
Montclair, NJ – Sophomore
Sydney Stein (Reistertown, MD, Owings Mills) broke the school record in the 1000 freestyle as the Montclair State women's swimming and diving team battled perennial NJAC power The College of New Jersey down to the final event before falling 119-111 at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool on Friday evening.
Senior
Michael Smith (Cherry Hill, NJ, Cherry Hill East) won a pair of events as the MSU men lost to the Lions 129-94 as both teams dropped to 0-2 on the season, 0-1 in the NJAC.
Stein won two events as did classmate
Katherine LaCava (Milltown, NJ, Mount St. Mary's) as the Montclair State women led the Lions 107-106 heading into the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. A victory by the Red Hawks would earn Montclair the victory however the quartet of
Gabriella Bosa (Freehold, NJ, Freehold Township),
Tori Holtzberg (Ridgewood, NJ, Ridgewood),
Alyson Gawin (Cochranville, PA, Octorara Area) and
Michaela Tighe (Linwood, NJ, Mainland Regional) came up short as the group posted a time of 3:51.04, four seconds behind the TCNJ squad.
Earlier in the meet Stein broke the 2008 record in the 1000 freestyle as she swam 11:05.56, surpassing the previous standard of 11:08.52 set by Galina Loutchouk against Rowan. Stein would later add a victory in the 500 freestyle clocking in at 5:29.66.
LaCava earned two wins of her own taking top honors in the 200 individual medley (2:17.93) and the 100 butterfly (1:01.98). She also finished second in the 500 freestyle at 5:31.08.
Christine Werner (Livingston, NJ, Livingston) and
Jessica Joseph (Brick, NJ, Brick Township) finished 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke with times of 1:11.64 and 1:12.49, respectively.
Smith posted first-place showings in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. He won the 200 free with a time of 1:46.55 before coming back to record a time of 4:55.85 in the 500 event.
The Red Hawks go right back into action on Saturday, October 26 as it heads to Schenectady, NY for the Union College Relays.
