Montclair, NJ – Freshmen
Erin Sullivan (Bridgewater, NJ, Bridgewatwer-Raritan) and
Jennie Hornstra (Clifton, NJ, Clifton) scored five minutes apart in the first half helping No. 6/10 Montclair State remain unbeaten with a 3-0 win over Rutgers-Camden at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday evening.
Junior
Melanie Greco (Bridgewater, NJ, Bridgewater-Raritan) added a goal in the second half for the Red Hawks, who upped their record to 11-0-0 overall, 4-0-0 in the NJAC. MSU also tied the program record for the longest winning streak matching the 11 consecutive wins set in 2000.
Senior goalkeeper Lauren West (Mantua, NJ / Clearview Regional) had eight saves for Rutgers-Camden, which has dropped four straight as the Scarlet Raptors fell to 3-7-1, 1-4-0 in the league.
Montclair State, ranked sixth by D3Soccer.com and 10th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) is 15-0-1 all-time against the Scarlet Raptors.
West made four saves early in the game until Montclair State finally broke through with 8:18 to play in the opening half. Sophomore
Shawna Grabowski (Woodbridge, NJ, Woodbridge) attempted a shot from just outside the top of the box that was blocked by a defender. The ball came over to Sullivan who collected the carom on the left side before firing a shot into the upper right corner for the game's first goal.
West would come up with a save on Kaila Fasano two minutes later but Montclair broke through again on Hornstra's third of the
season with 3:52 remaining. The Red Hawks served ball across the goalmouth down toward the left end line. Hornstra got one shot off that was blocked but picked it up again and lifted a shot from the extreme flat angle that banked in off the far right post for a 2-0 Red Hawks advantage.
The lead would have to three goals two minutes later if not for two back saves from Raptor defender Rachel Sindoni (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East). Another perfectly placed ball deep along the left side at the six gave MSU a virtual open net. Fasano fired a first shot that Sindoni kicked away and then repeated the action after Fasano collected the rebound to keep the game at 2-0 heading into halftime.
Greco tallied the final goal in the 64th minute. Jessica Kiniery ran down a ball on the right side and served it back to the top of the box to
Martina Landeka (Westfield, NJ, Westfield), who then made a perfect back-tap pass down along the left side where Greco finished off the feed for her fifth of the season and a 3-0 Montclair State lead.
Meanwhile the Montclair State defense, which currently leads Division III in goals against average and shutouts percentage, stymied the Rutgers-Camden attack as the Red Hawks did not allow a shot in posting their 10th shutout in 11 games this season. Junior
Gina Policastro (East Brunswick, NJ, East Brunswick) was the recipient of the defensive effort registering her seventh shutout of the year.
Senior Leighanna Milby (Blackwood, NJ / Highland Regional) had two saves in the final 18 minutes for Rutgers-Camden.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday, October 8 with home non-conference contests. Montclair State will host Eastern University at 7:00 pm with the Scarlet Raptors taking on Catholic University at the same time.
