Montclair, NJ - Senior outside hitter
Sara Girgus (Green Brook, NJ, Watchung Hills) collected 14 kills over two matches as Montclair State put together a solid hitting performance and served up 34 aces in sweeping past John Jay and Old Westbury at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday.
Freshman
Courtney Matlock (Jackson, NJ, Jackson Memorial) added 13 kills as MSU (10-6) knocked off John Jay 25-16, 25-12, 25-7 in the first match of the day before coming back for a 25-12, 25-11, 25-13 win against Old Westbury.
The Red Hawks hit .368 as a team in the two wins, including .370 in the first-match win against the Bloodhounds (2-13). MSU, which hit .500 in the third set, committed just nine errors in 73 attempts while putting down 36 kills. Matlock, Girgus and
Rebecca Matasker (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) each had seven kills while posting hitting efficiency percentages of .500, .308 and .545, respectively.
Setter
Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) collected 29 assists and also had four digs while
Kimberly Butrico (Cresskill, NJ, Cresskill),
Leah Stine (Bridgewater, NJ, Bridgewater-Raritan) and
Melissa Terpstra (Midland Park, NJ, Midland Park) served up four aces apiece. Senior libero
Kaitlyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) led the way with seven digs for MSU.
Courtney LePore (Deer Park, NY, Deer Park) posted three blocks with Girgus making two.
Girgus would add seven more kills and also had five aces as Montclair knocked off the Panthers (3-9). Her seven kills came in 11 attempts as Montclair hit .360 for the match. Terpstra had six kills as did Matlock while
Jessica Mulderig (Nesconset, NY, Smithtown) chipped in with four. Girgus also added four aces with
Erika Gerner (Sparta, NJ, Sparta) collecting three along with five digs. Campo led MSY with 29 assists and also had seven digs.
The Red Hawks return to action on Tuesday, October 8 as they head to City College of New York for a 7:00 pm matchup with the Beavers.
