Melissa Terpstra (Midland Park, NJ, Midland Park) tallied a team-high nine kills while classmates
Courtney Matlock (Jackson, NJ, Jackson Memorial) and
Rebecca Matasker (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) had eight and seven, respectively as Montclair State swept past CCNY in three sets on Tuesday evening.
Junior
Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) collected 31 assists while senior libero
Kaitlyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) totaled 10 digs as the Red Hawks moved to 11-6 with a 25-12, 25-21, 25-14 victory. It was MSU's second straight win against the Beavers as Montclair took a 5-4 lead in the all-time series.
Montclair trailed 4-1 in the opening set but battled back for a 10-7 lead before going on four-point run to take control. Matasker and
Dana McNish (Hawthorne, NJ, Hawthorne) each had kills and a service aces by
Elise Brackett (Bogota, NJ, Bogota) pushed the score to 14-7. CCNY climbed back to 18-12 however and attack error by the Beavers ignited a seven-point set-ending run which included three straight kills by Matasker for a 24-12 advantage.
The second set saw MSU in a tight battle that included 10 tied and eight lead changes. The Red Hawks trailed 20-19 when it went on a four-point run with kills by McNish and Terpstra sandwiching a pair of errors by CCNY for a 23-20 lead. After giving up a point, McNish recorded another kill before Matlock ended the set with a kill of her own as MSU led the match 2-0.
In the third, Montclair fell behind again and trailed 3-0 before the Red Hawks took advantage of errors by CCNY for a 7-6 lead. The lead would got to 9-7 before Montclair State reeled off nine of the next 11 points for an 18-9 advantage on kill from
Sara Girgus (Green Brook, NJ, Watchung Hills). Girgus would add another kill for a 20-12 lead and then served up an ace to MSU in front 23-13. Alyssa Angel collected the final two points for the Red Hawks as she had a kill before ending the match with an ace.
The Red Hawks return to action on Thursday, October 10 as they head to Wayne, NJ to face William Paterson in an NJAC matchup at 7:00 pm.
