Oneonta, NY – The Montclair State volleyball team split its first two matches at the Dig Pink Invitational held at SUNY Oneonta on Friday evening. The Red Hawks fell in four sets to Plattsburgh State before bouncing back for a five-set win over Hartwick.
Freshman
Melissa Terpstra (Midland Park, NJ, Midland Park) had 11 kills and senior
Marta Topor (Bogota, NJ, Bogota) seven as Montclair split the first two sets with Plattburgh losing 25-18 and winning 25-19 before Plattsburgh won the final two sets 25-17 and 25-22.
Terpstra posted a double-double with 10 kills while
Rebecca Matasker (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) had six kills and eight digs.
Sara Girgus (Green Brook, NJ, Watchung Hills) posted five kills with libero
Kaitlyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) registering a team-best 21 digs. Setter
Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) had a double-double with 27 assists and 11 digs and
Kimberly Butrico (Cresskill, NJ, Cresskill) chipped in with 13 digs. Sophomore
Courtney LePore (Deer Park, NY, Deer Park) and Girgus had five and four kills respectively.
Terpstra added another double-double in the win over Hartwick as MSU defeated the Hawks 13-25, 25-20, 25-18, 14-25 and 15-6. It was Montclair's first five-set in three tries this season.
Matasker had 12 kills and three blocks with
Erika Gerner (Sparta, NJ, Sparta) notching nine kills. Irwin paced MSU with 25 digs with
Samantha Szura (Hewitt, NJ, Ramapo) and Butrico getting 21 and 15, respectively.
Montclair State will have two more matches on Saturday, November 2 as the Red Hawks face CUNYAC foes Baruch College and Hunter College at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm, respectively. It will be the second time this year that MSU will face each team having lost to Baruch back in September while posting a 3-1 win over Hunter last Saturday in New York City.
Following its appearance at the Dig Pink Invitational the Red Hawks return home for the first round of the NJAC Tournament on Tuesday, November 5. Montclair State, the No. 4 seed will host fifth-seeded Ramapo College at 7:00 pm.
