Women's Soccer Advances to NCAA Second Round on Fasano's Late Second-Half Goal

Red Hawks Top Colby-Swyer 1-0, Will Face Bowdoin in Second Round

Montclair, NJ – Junior forward Kaila Fasano (Westwood, NJ, Westwood) scored with  6:26 remaining to lift Montclair State to a 1-0 victory over Colby-Sawyer in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship at Sprague Field on Saturday evening.

Junior goalkeeper Gina Policastro (East Brunswick, NJ, East Brunswick) stopped four shutouts as the Red Hawks (19-0-1) advance to the second round and will face Bowdoin College in the second round of the tournament on Sunday, November 17 at 5:00 pm. The winner advances to the NCAA Sectional Tournament which will be played next weekend.

Sophomore goalkeeper Karley Hamilton (Bradford, VT) had five saves for the Chargers, who The conclude the best season in program history at 19-4.

Fasano collected her ninth goal of the season when junior Francesca Gibson (Cape May, NJ, Lower Cape May Regional) played a ball across the box to Fasano who knocked in the feed for what turned out to be the only goal of the game.

Montclair State outshot Colby-Sawyer 16-5 in the contest, including 13-2 in the second half after each team had three shots in the first 45 minutes.

Policastro, the NCAA leader in goals against average posted her 13th shutout of the year and the Red Hawks' 18th in 20 contests.

In the other first-round contest on Saturday evening Bowdoin College scored three times in the second half as the Polar Bears knocked off Christopher Newport, 3-1 to set up the Sunday meeting with Montclair State.

Christopher Newport, which finished the year at 14-4-2, got on the board in the 31st minute when Lindsay Mondloch (Fairfax, Station, VA) scored on an unassisted tally her third of the season.

The Captains would outshoot Bowdoin 6-3 in the first half however the Bears reversed that in the second half with a 9-2 margin in shots and scored three times in a span of 10:43.

The Polar Bears tied the game at 61:04 when Demi Feder (Malta, NY) found Kiersten Turner (Gorham, ME) for the first goal tying the game at 1-1. Maggie Godley (North Kingston, RI) gave Bowdoin the lead 1:57 later off an assist from Jenna DiCicco (Lincoln, MA) and Molly Popolizio (Rexford, NY) capped the run with her fifth of the year at 71:47.

Bowdoin goalkeeper Bridget McCarthy (Hopkinton, MA) stopped two shots to earn the victory, her 11th win of the season (11-3-2)

Freshman goalkeeper Haley Casanova (Ashburn, VA) made five saves for Christopher Newport.
