New York, NY – Freshman outside hitter Courtney Matlock (Jackson, NJ, Jackson Memorial) registered her second straight 17-kill performance helping Montclair State rally from two one-set deficits however Spalding (KY) handed the Red Hawks a second consecutive five-set loss in the NYU Labor Day Weekend Invitational on Saturday.
Sophomore Courtney LePore (Deer Park, NY, Deer Park) added 10 kills for MSU, which dropped to 0-3 on the season.
MSU fell 25-21 in the first set but tied the match with a 25-16 second-set win posting a .444 hitting efficiency with Matlock getting five kills while LePore and freshman Nicole Izzo (Flemington, NJ, Hunterdon Central) each notching three. A 25-17 loss in the third set put the Red Hawks behind again however four kills from Matlock and three by LePore led to a 25-15 four-set win squaring the match at 2-2.
But Spalding ran off the first five points of the decisive fifth set and led 12-3 before a small run by Montclair late in the set closed the gap. Spalding closed out the match with a 15-7 win.
Freshman Rebecca Matasker (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) had six kills off the bench for the Red Hawks while Izzo and senior Marta Topor (Bogota, NJ, Bogota) had four kills apiece. Junior setter Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) had 43 assists and five digs while Melissa Terpstra (Midland Park, NJ, Midland Park) collected three kills and 11 digs.
Senior libero Kaitlyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) led the team with 21 digs bringing her within 85 of the MSU all-time record. Senior Kimberly Butrico (Cresskill, NJ, Cresskill) added 11 digs.
The Red Hawks look to break into the win column for the first on Wednesday as they travel back to New York City. MSU takes on Baruch College at 7:00 pm.
