Montclair, NJ – Senior outside hitter Marta Topor (Bogota, NJ, Bogota) collected nine kills and Montclair State came up with 17 service aces, including seven by freshman Melissa Terpstra as the Red Hawks picked up their second straight win with a 3-0 sweep of Farmingdale State on Thursday evening.
Freshman Rebecca Matasker (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) had five kills for the Red Hawks, who improved to 2-4 on the year beating the Rams (0-8) for the seventh time in nine all-time meetings. MSU won the match 25-12, 25-16 and 25-13.
Terpstra served the first four points which included two aces and a kill by sophomore Dana McNish (Hawthorne, NJ, Hawthorne). Farmingdale would trim the lead back to three points at 10-7 however the Red Hawks went on a 7-0 run which was started on a kill by Leah Stine (Bridgewater, NJ, Bridgewater-Raritan). Terpstra had a pair of kills in the run and Elise Brackett (Bogota, NJ, Bogota) served two aces as Montclair went up 17-7. Terpstra's third ace of the opening set pushed the lead to 21-8 and a kill by Courtney Matlock (Jackson, NJ, Jackson Memorial) on set point gave MSU a 25-12 victory and a 1-0 lead.
In the second set, Farmingdale took an early 3-0 however Montclair countered with nine of th next 10 points, including two aces from Samantha Szura (Hewitt, NJ, Ramapo) to build a 9-4 advantage. The Rams battled back pulling within 14-13 but Montclair erupted with eight straight points, three of which coming on aces by Terpstra as the lead grew to 22-13. Topor, who had four kills in the set, tallied the final three points as Montclair won 25-16 taking a 2-0 advantage.
Montclair led 8-6 in the third before Topor collected three consecutive kills and Matasker served an ace to make the score 12-6. Farmingdale would get within 14-9 however Montclair recorded five of the next six points to take a 19-10 advantage. Sara Girgus (Green Brook, NJ, Watchung Hills) had back-to-back aces and a kill from setter Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) made the score 23-11. After a service error by the Rams put MSU at match point, Allyssa Angel (Flemington, NJ, Hunterdon Central) collected a kill to close out the victory at 25-13.
Campo finished with 37 assists while Terpstra had three kills and five digs in addition to her seven aces. McNish, Matlock and Girgus, who finished with four aces, had four kills apiece with libero Kaitlyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) posting a team-best seven digs.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, September 14 as the Red Hawks play at tri-match at NYU-Polytechnic in New York City. MSU will face host NYU-Poly and Cedar Crest. Farmingdale is on the road on Friday, September 13 the Roadrunner Invitational at Ramapo College.
