Montclair, NJ – Junior forward
Melanie Greco (Bridgewater, NJ, Bridgewater-Raritan) collected a pair of goals as 24th-ranked Montclair State scored three times in the second half for a 3-0 win over Frostburg State at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday.
Junior
Kaila Fasano (Westwood, NJ, Westwood) had a goal and assist for the Red Hawks, now 6-0 as they continue the best start in school history. It was the first meeting between the teams.
Junior goalkeeper Katie Smith (Reistertown, MD / Maryvale Prep) had 10 saves for the Bobcats, who fell to 2-3.
Montclair State outshot the Bobcats 27-8 in the match, including 12-5 in the first half yet the Red Hawks could not find a way to put one into the back of the net. In fact, it was Frostburg State who got the first chance as Chelsea Paskowski (Leesburg, VA / Heritage) fired a shot in the 10th minute that was snared by MSU keeper
Gina Policastro (East Brunswick, NJ, East Brunswick).
From there it was Smith making five saves, including a pair of against
Jennie Hornstra (Clifton, NJ, Clifton), the latter coming at the 26:00 mark. Smith came up big again near the end of the half stopping Greco at 38:23 and
Janae Geonnetti (Mount Laurel, NJ, Paul VI) a minute later before closing out her fist half with a save on a shot by Melissa Koster with 3:40 remaining.
Smith would keep it going in the second half with four more saves before Montclair finally broke through at 59:14 when Greco pounced on a rebound for her third goal of the season putting the Red Hawks on the board.
The game would stay 1-0 until the final 6:15 when MSU scored twice. Fasano headed in a corner kick from
Jenna Carroll (East Brunswick, NJ, East Brunswick) for her third of the year. Greco capped off the scoring as she headed in a pass from Fasano with 43 ticks left for the final margin.
Policastro made three saves for her fourth shutout of the year as MSU recorded its sixth in as many matches. The shutout was the 21st for Policastro, who is in second place on the all-time MSU list.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, September 18 as it travels to Patchogue, NY to face St. Joseph's College in a 7:00 pm matchup. Frostburg State is back on the road on Tuesday, September 17 at McDaniel in a 4:00 pm contest.
