No. 22 Men's Soccer Slips Past William Paterson on Wurzburger's Golden Goal

Red Hawks Win Fourth Straight; Improve to 8-3 Overall, 3-0 NJAC

Wayne, NJ - Senior midfielder Maxx Wurzburger scored with 3:46 remaining in the first overtime period as No. 22 Montclair State slipped past local rival William Paterson University on Wednesday evening.

Wurzburger's goal, his third of the season, lifted the Red Hawks to their fourth straight victory as Montclair improved to 8-3 overall, 3-0 in the NJAC.

Both teams had chances during the opening half, including a try by Pioneer senior midfielder Rafael Marques (Woodland Park, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) that was pushed wide with three minutes left in the opening period. The Red Hawks sent a number of shots wide of the left post during the first 25 minutes of the second half, and junior midfielder Carlos Arevalo (North Haledon, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) had a chance midway through the period when MSU keeper Michael Gonzalez (Kenilworth, NJ, Union Catholic) came well off his line, but he could not get a clean attempt off from just outside the box.

A scramble caught Pioneer sophomore keeper Mike Diacheysn (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) out in the box 10 minutes later, but the Red Hawks couldn't take advantage. Wurzburger missed the right post in the 82nd minute, and freshman Kyle Goodwin (South Brunswick, NJ, South Brunswick) put one just over the top of the bar with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.

Goodwin had an open look four minutes into the overtime, but he slotted it just outside the right post. Wurzburger made good on his next opportunity after junior Damian Bziukiewicz (East Rutherford, NJ, Becton Regional) set him up with a heel pass, and his strike was good past a diving Diacheysn.

Diacheysn finished with two saves for the Pioneers, and Gonzalez had six stops for MSU as he recorded his third shutout of the year.

Montclair State returns home for an NJAC contest on Saturday, October 4 against The College of New Jersey. Kickoff is set for 6:00 pm.
