Goodwin's Golden Goal in Overtime Gets No. 22 Men's Soccer Past TCNJ, 2-1

Red Hawks Capture Fifth Straight Victory

Montclair, NJ – Freshman forward Kyle Goodwin (South Brunswick, NJ, South Brunswick) scored 1:26 into overtime lifting No. 22 Montclair State to its fifth straight victory as the Red Hawks slipped past The College of New Jersey 2-1 at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday evening.

Junior Lucas Terci (Union, NJ, Union) also had a goal for MSU (9-3, 4-0 NJAC), which trailed by a goal until the 80th minute.

Sophomore midfielder Thomas Hogue (Ridgefield Park, NJ / Bergen Catholic) collected the goal for the Lions, who fell for the fourth time in their last five matches. TCNJ is now 4-7-2, 0-4 in the NJAC.

The two teams played a scoreless first half with each getting solid possession only to find that taken away as it got toward the goal. MSU outshot the Lions 6-4, including a header in the eighth minute by Damian Bziukiewicz (East Rutherford, NJ, Becton Regional) deep in the box that was stopped on keeper Jake Nesteruk (Doylestown, PA / Central Bucks East) on a last-second reaction. Later in the period TCNJ's Sean Etheridge (Seaville, NJ / Ocean City) tried to head in a high cross from the right side but Montclair's Michael Gonzalez (Kenilworth, NJ, Union Catholic) picked the ball out of the air keeping the score at 0-0.

Late in the first period, New Jersey pushed the ball down inside the box and managed to keep it there as the Red Hawks failed to clear. Kevin McCartney (Old Bridge, NJ / St. Joseph's) slid the ball over to the top-right side of the box where Hogue fired a right-footed shot inside the near post for his second goal of the season with 3:02 to go before halftime.

TCNJ carried that lead into the half and was able to maintain it early in the second as Nesteruk came up with three early saves, including a punch shot of a Goodwin attempt from the left side at the 51:15 mark. Hogue nearly had a chance to extend the lead for the Lions in the 66th minute taking a pass and driving in along the left side. He would get the shot off, however Gonzalez made a sliding stop keeping the Red Hawks within striking distance.

Nesteruk would come up with two more saves, including one against Terci off a free kick at 77:13 however Terci would tie the game just over two minutes later with his seventh goal of the year. Senior Brian Cullen (Clementon, NJ, Highland Regional) served a ball off the corner of the box into the middle directly on to the foot of Terci who one-timed the ball past Nesteruk tying the contest at 1-1.

For the third time in the last five meetings the Red Hawks and Lions would into overtime however it would not last long as Bziukiewicz took a pass from Terci and drove along the right side of the box before crossing a ground ball to the left post where Goodwin banged in the feed for the game winner.

Nesteruk finished with seven saves for TCNJ while Gonzalez had two for the Red Hawks. Montclair outshot the Lions 16-6 with MSU getting the edge in corner kicks, 4-3.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, October 7 when it travels to Manhattanville College for a 6:00 pm matchup with the Valiants. TCNJ is home to Muhlenberg the same evening at 7:30 pm.
